I think under 3 and under is too small. I had a 3.5 lb yorkie and she was sick all the time. Now I have a 5.9 lber and he is alot healthier.

and hasnt grown at all and stays at 2 pounds i dont know if she is going to grow much more but everyone is telling me that she's not. that the rate she is going i think is is going to weigh 2 1/2 to 3 pounds. and she is not a problem at all at that size. i just have to keep my eyes on her all the time. But i love her so much that its not a problem. When she first got home everyone was stepping on her and kicking her because they didn't see her but now we got us to her being around and looking down more. She is a hand ful but worth it when people love how teenie tiny she is. she is very health and i hate how people are so negative about it. I think its just because they are very expensive and not everyone can get one. But im sure people with big yorkie would take a tiny one if someone would give it to them.

I find that quite insulting - I wanted a Yorkshire terrier they are a British breed which should be 4-7lb that is the correct weight according to the kennel club. I don't want to see the breed I love become smaller and smaller to the point they are unhealthy and unable to be dogs. Only a few years ago any under 4lb would have been called runts as they were the smallest weakest animals but I wouldn't be so nasty as to insult any dog or owner by using that term today. If people want smaller dogs I usually point them in the direction of a Chihuahua which should be 2-4lb ideally. My dog is bigger than the norm because nasty people who wanted a tiny found they had a 10lber and they abandoned him. This fashion for wanting smaller yorkies could destroy the breed. And is seeing an enormous leap in numbers of real Yorkshire terriers in rescues and being thrown away by a society obsessed with smaller and smaller animals.

I agreed with you Jules. Pixiestart I find the comment insulting also but I dont want to start anything of it. I do think that the need to have Yorkies so small is why you find so many bad breeders out there that breed for 2lbs and then charge ridiculous prices. Also just because your pup being so tiny hasnt had any health problems so far doesnt mean thats the standard. Even my vet told me that she hope Gucci wouldnt be too small due to the higher risks. Luckily Gucci is 4 to 5 lbs. Im not saying a 2lbs is not a Yorkie, of course it is. Is just is a very fragile Yorkie. I dont think the negativity you think is out there for tiny yorkies has anything to do with the higher prices. At least in my case I will prefer a Yorkie in the 4 to 7 lbs, and if Im offer a tiny Yorkie under 3 lbs even free I wouldnt take the pup cause I know Im not prepared to handle such a fragile baby. Im glad that your baby is very healthy, I guess you are one of the lucky ones. I hope Im not offending you in any way, Im just stating my opinion. Of course you have the rite for your own.

alot of people make it seem as though i a bad pet owner. thats crazy ! yeah my baby is a runt but want normally happens to them ? I gave it a home and i take care of her dont get my wrong its work but not as hard as people make it out to be. The breeder i went to was a wonderful man and sold me a perfect puppie. The vet even told me he was surprise because sometimes they have a cough or an ear infection and she had nothing wrong with her. She is strong and health and fine being her size. She is so beautiful you would melt in her present she is a gift to me and i adore her. She is tiny but full of live and love.

I don't think anyone here has suggested anyone with a smaller yorkie is a bad owner - what I don't like to see is breeders deliberately changing the breed into something it isn't. Surely a good breeder should be breeding to the correct conformation etc ?

My second Yorkie was a runt at 3.5 lbs and I loved her sooo much. It is just looking back I know now in her case she was not as healthy as she could of been. I would do it all over again because she was a great little dog.

I couldn't agree more w/ you Julie1. I don't look down on people who own the teeny tiny yorkie babies but I hate the people who breed their smallest males & bitches to produce the sociably acceptable "teacup" sized yorkies! They have no right to ruin the breed like they're doing. The small size is such a "fashion trend" and it makes me sick. If you're someone who just so happened to purchase or adopt a 'runt' of the litter then there's no harm in it. Bc most of the time there will always be atleast one really small less developed pup and that furbaby deserves to be loved just as much as any other.(BUT they shouldn't cost more bc they're smaller!)But if you knowingly purchase a dog that you have been guaranteed will not out weigh 3lbs or bellow bc that's the way the breeders have bred them, then you are only fueling the fire to end of this lovely breed. I mean for goodness sakes! The original yorkshire terriers were bred to be between 12 & 14lbs plus! If people continue to manipulate the blood lines of these rapidly shrinking dogs then I can see no future for them at all. The purpose in intentional breeding is to put together the two strongest, healthiest all around dogs to produce the best pups possible. But sadly the quality of these yorkies have been down sized (literally) to quantity instead just so that people can charge OUTRAGEOUS prices for pups that in reality only suffer from poor health, short life spans and constant injuries. I just pray that people will soon come to their senses and stop this rediculus nonsense. When my bf & I went to pick out a puppy we had a whole litter to pick from. And you know what we looked for to pick him out? Not his weight, not his color and not his potential to be a "purse puppy". We picked Harley bc he was the happiest, funniest, sweetest most energetic baby out of the bunch! He had a 'runt' little brother who probably won't make it past 3lbs full grown and a just as cute brother and two teeny sisters but we picked him bc he was the happiest! That's how I wish that people would pick out their furbabies! Don't spend outrageous amounts of money on a mass produced puppy(yes I believe that they deserve to be loved too but by purchasing one you may think you're helping by saving him/her but you are only helping along the process w/ future generations of unhealthy & unhappy yorkies.. This also goes for dogs/cats sold @ petstores) who has to be flown in hours away! Take your time and find a local breeder or atleast one w/in driving distance who cost you an arm, a leg and the next 3 months pay checks! Go to meet the breeders, check out their facilities and the puppies environments, ask them every question your heart desires and even ones you never thought to ask. If they don't seem trustworthy or don't fit your expectations 100% don't bend. Bc there is a perfect puppy for every single person. It just takes time and patiece and a lot of knowledge. Knowledge that I've learned so much of on this wonderful site @ YT! Well, I've finished venting for now..

I agreed with you 100%. When we pick Gucci, we choose her because she was the one that was more energetic and happy to see us. She click with us inmediately. She was the runt of the litter but she is not tiny. She is 4 to 5 lbs and she is 10 months. I still remember the day we saw her, she was licking us like crazy. We felt in love in an instant.

People who breed females under 5lbs aren't good breeders, that's the problem. People go out & buy a dog that's intended to be 'used' as a fashion accessory from backyard breeders who are breeding dogs that don't fit the standard. Pixiestar - this is not an attack but I wanted to respond to what you wrote.
Like many people on YT I spent a lot of money to get the dog I wanted. I can afford a small yorkie, I chose to buy one that would be in the four to seven pound range. Believe it or not many people do. I know that people who own small yorkies sometimes get a lot of flak because of it so I understand why you may feel defensive and I am glad you found the dog that makes you happy but not everyone wants one that small.

I dont think that I could take a dog that was 2 pounds full grown. I mean, Memphis is 9.5 pounds and I would be terrified that he would hurt one that tiny. I have to throw my opinion out there and say that I too think that people who pay for these ity bity little yorkies are just promoting the breeding of such small dogs more and they are just asking for the breed to have more health issues. Just my opinion and I will leave it at that. Enough said.

Perfect Pup, I do understand where you are coming from but I do find the statement a little harsh. I have an 8 lb male and a very small little girl who I am praying will make it to 3 1/2 lbs, I am not sure she will but i can hope still.
She is not sickly and she is conformationally just perfect so far. I bought her from an excellent breeder who sold her at a normal price because she was too small to be anything but a pet. Her mother was over 5 lbs and her father was 4. She is small not unhealthy. I knew she was going to be on the small side when I bought her but I certainly do not feel like I am a fool. I hope she lives a very long life because I do love her, not because she is a fashion statement I got over that years ago.
Please do not lump all buyers into your statement. I can assure you that my breeder in no way was breeding for a tiny nor would have sold me a puppy with any health problems knowingly. I would have bought this puppy if she were too big for a show/breeding dog as fast as I would have bought her because she is too small. I fell in love with her face not her size.

im starting to think that people that are making such nasty comments about our tiny baby are just jealous that they couldn't afford one. lol I can honestly say that my baby hads a beautiful face, and that was the very first reason i bought her at 1400 dollar might i add. She is worth every penny, and shes amazing and healthy.i dont get it with you people! just because they are small doesnt mean that they dont make great pets . I feel like its a rumor, or something. its stupid stop hating! Oh my pixie star is 5 month and weights 2 pounds.
