Tiny Yorkies

This maybe alittle off topic, sorry..

Why would anyone breed a tiny female just to get tiny puppies? MONEY! As I have posted on other threads about my Tyler which did not come from tiny parents, he is 6 months old and weighs 1.6 lbs.. He is perfectly normal and has had every test there is performed on him.. I would NEVER sell him and place him, one drop or one time being stepped on he would be done! I do NOT care how much money someone offered me for Tyler, he will NEVER leave my home and care..

To me the only reason someone would bred a tiny female is to receive tiny puppies.. From my experience with Tyler, I myself could NOT imagine a litter of Tylers..

I also do not believe that most people consider a 5 lbs female tiny.. The AKC standard is 4-7 lbs.. Not 3-15 lbs.. I believe there are alot more people out their breeding females that are under 3 lbs! That is why we are seeing so many tinies advertised for thousands of dollars!

I know most people on this board has a problems with breeding under the 5lb mark.
I know of some that also breed tinies and the will not post because of being Bashed for it.

If your vet says ok and you feel comfortable then there should be no problem. Of course the dam must be in perfect health to breed and same with the sire........I think some people are just against breeding tinies because they are a handful, you have to watch them carefully for a long time. It does not mean that they are less a yorkie because they are so small.....

It is the breeders that are breeding for tiny so called teacup, toys or minis that are being irresponsible! WHENEVER someone breeds a dog they are taking that dogs life into their own hands and I do NOT care what the size of the dog is! There have been many yorkie breeders with female over 5-6 lbs. and they also have been devasted by the end result!

I always tell everyone NEVER purchase a yorkie from someone that advertises or refers to their dogs/puppies as teacups, toys or minis!

It all goes back to being educated and making the proper choices for your dog and NOT your bank account!

It seems everyone has their own opinion....Tell me this if yorkies started about being say around 35 pounds then how in the world did they get down to 7 pounds lets say.... Wonder what dogs did before humans came along and decided who could and could not be bred.
By all means of course I would not breed one that my vet said not to due to problems that could arise but if there were no problems then why not breed one smaller than 5 pounds...Who said we have the right to down others for what they believe? We do not have the right, nor do we have the right to try and push our opinions on others.....
We should all consider each others feelings and not push what is not wanted..

Breeding any type of dog is a "handful" and you have to watch them carefully. People are against breeding tinies because the same thing can be achieved by breeding a smaller male to the female without putting the dam's life in jeopardy. Pregnancy weight for the dam would be more difficult and they would more likely need a c-section. The puppies could even take alot of the mother. No one says that they are "less of a yorkie." But as a dog owner you have the responsibility to do what is best for the dog.

I agree that breeding tiny's under 4lbs is mean and wrong and that we need to stay more in the Yorkie standard.
But I think it is just as wrong to breed a 7-8lbs female Yorkie because that's also not in the standard either. That's why more and more people have 10-15 pound Yorkies instead of the AKC standard of 4-7lbs.
If we're talking about the Yorkie standard here then a breeder who breeds a larger female is just as wrong as a breeder who breeds a tiny (your both not breeding for the betterment of the Yorkie standard).
Yes you can say you would rather a 15 lb Yorkie rather then a 4lb but that's not the Yorkie standard and if you wanted a bigger dog than you need to find a different breed.

I know a lot of people can say "well a larger female won't have as high of odds of dying during pregnancy or complications" but a breed standard is a breed standard!

I don't want to belittle the standards, but there is a BIG difference to me. To me putting a dog's life in jeopardy to have tiny babies is morally wrong, they only care about the extra $$. On the other hand, to breed a large yorkie outside the standard means that they just don't care about quality. If I HAD to choose between 3lb dog that had issues, vs a healthy 10 lb dog, I would choose the bigger one.

You are mistaken if you believe a dog is healthy just because it is BIG. I imagine the number of tiny Yorkies and large Yorkies from reputable breeders is the same. Experienced breeders lead to healthy Yorkies.

I bet MORE of the huge Yorkies come from breeders who have no regard for the standard and throw two pets together to make puppies. Anyone doing something like that doesn't have knowledge of the breed and ignorance leads to health issues.

These dogs are supposed to be small. Under 7lbs. One of the reasons people are attracted to Yorkies is they want a small dog. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't agree with breeding tiny females but I think it's just as bad to breed poor quality large Yorkies.

A standard is a standard. You can't say it's ok to break a standard one way and not the other.

IMO it is WORSE to breed a tiny yorkie because it is harder on her, so the breeder has more of a disreguard to her life than the standard. Since when are standards worth more than the dog's life? I think that people keep pushing the envelope and wanting smaller and smaller, not nessasarily better. I believe that breeders should aim to have puppies within the standard. I did not say bigger yorkies are more healthy, but it has been written that tinies have attendancy to be "more suseptable to health problems:

March 2006 issue of Dog Fancy. Every month they do a several page article on a specific breed. This month's breed, THE YORKSHIRE TERRIER!!!!!!!
they have a section called No Teacups. It reads:

"The tiniest of the tiny Yorkies, weighing less than the standard size of 4 to 7 pounds as adults, are sometimes called "Teacup Yorkies."
