| Lovebirds and Yorkies Hi all! Growing up I never had dogs, but I always had parakeets. So I've always had a love of birds. I've been thinking of expanding my pet family and getting lovebirds! Any other Yorkie owners have lovebirds??? I'm not sure if my yorkie would care if I got another pet (I think they stay in their cage majority of the time). Also, is it ok to buy lovebirds from a petstore like petsmart? Or is it recommended you get them from a breeder like dogs? Any insight into the matter would be helpful!

| If lovebirds are handfed they require daily handling and love to be out of the cage with there "human". I use to raise lovebirds. However with that said I had a schnauzer that was raised with birds, she would allow the birds to ride on her wherever they pleased. They got along well. But most any bird is going to want to be out of the cage most of the time when you are home. I would also recommend a breeder to be sure they are handfed. Lovebird can be very nippy if they are not raised appropriately. Good luck

| i've had birds for over 20 years. i would much rather get a bird from someone who breeds them rather than a petsmart. i once had a fisher lovebird, someone gave it to me. was an older bird, not tame at all. right now besides my 3 dogs i have one very old cockateil ( she's 21), a young cockateil ( he's 1 1/2) and an african grey parrot ( she is around 20 ) i've had them all since they were babies. i love them all so much. the old teil is very sweet, and the young one i have is actually talking. i think that is the best time to get them, but i'm sure the right older bird would be a good pet too. good luck, i hope you find the bird you are looking for

| There are bird mills just as there are puppy mills. I would look around for a good breeder and buy from them. My Cockatoo came from a lovely lady that bred and she is so much calmer then the Cockatoos that were bought from stores. When I was young I worked for a bird store and I know how they come in. They ship them in a box to the store and some are not healthy. Everyday I would go in and find dead birds, smaller birds like love birds, parakeets etc. and it would break my heart. I stayed there because I enjoyed the bigger birds and working with them, but didn't last too long, maybe a few months. The Cockatoo that was shipped also had trouble eating. They wean them way too young another problem with buying from a store and when they are weaned young they tend to be more high strung etc. Please look for a good home breeder. E. |

| Thank you for all the great suggestions. I found a great local breeder that has hand-fed Lovebirds. I just emailed them to ask more questions. ' roseslevi: that's so cute that the birds "rode" around on your pup. Since the breeder I am looking at has hand-fed birds, I'm glad that they are more social. How do you regulate your bird as far as pooping wherever they want? If they are out of a cage majority of the time you are home, I can see it as a problem to regulate their poop. I assume, I would get a perch and put newspapers under it?

| Training to poop takes time and patience like every thing. I used a newspaper at first under a perch. His key word is time and he will say it as well when he needs to go. I used the sound of his poop hitting the paper as his training thing(gross huh ) but it worked with key word, sound, praise and a treat he got the idea>

| Some things to think about with Yorkies and Birds.. Yorkies are rat hunters...aka bird is a rat with wings to them..I know this from experience. Yorkies can get to areas in bird cages to eat the food, seeds, nuts, treat, and poop. Many birds carry coccidia or other parasites in their excrement. I owned a Macaw for 10 years. For 5 of those everything was fine with the dogs and the bird. Not one attempt to harm from either side. One day I was outside talking to the mailman and a neighbor when I heard a ruckus in the house. Low and behold the bird (Rena) was on the floor and being plucked by the dogs (4 of the 5) and they had in that short, 10 mins max, plucked all but her head and wing feathers off of her with blood of course from most of those places where feathers had been. Off to ER vet, 900 bucks later a lesson was learned. Never even for a split second allow them together alone, even taking a shower.... Also, being a breeder, I have always taken my pups to be checked at the vet prior to going to their new homes. One such time, a stool check showed coccidia. Treated the pups and rechecked. Still with coccidia.....after 3 treatments I thought about the fact that the little rascals were always getting under Renas cage and eating whatever she dropped. So I put a gate around the area and the coccidia was gone. So I asked my vet and he confirmed that yes indeed that could have been the cause. So I treated the bird and the pups and kept them out of that area and have not had that issue since. I found that with exhibiting now and the time for grooming, care, etc with the dogs I was neglecting Rena. I placed her an aviary home setting and she is doing wonderful. I have visited her twice and she is quite happy there. It broke my heart to do it, but when a bird is in the cage more than the bird is out, in my opinion, it is neglectful. I miss her everyday. She called me mom, gave me kisses, protected me from everyone, and I still cry about placing her. However, it was for her that I did it.

| I have lovebirds..and I adore them..so do my furbabies..Mine are allowed to fly around in the main house once in awhile..but they do have their own room also..I do allow them to nest if they want ..and I have two hatchlings now My little lovies ike to sleep in my shirt pockets and ride in their while I vaccum. takes baths in my hand..just does many things with me My yorkies love to play with them but at times they do get carried away..so OOP'S can happen Handfed is the best..if you can get one before it is place in a genral cage with many ..is best. you can have just one also..if you must give them attention they grave or they will go nuts..
