| Weight gain after neutering! My daschund is 5 years old, and I recently had him neutered a few months ago. Even though we were getting my girl yorkie, Triss, spayed, we thought it would be better for him anyways. Well, I feed him appx. one cup to one cup and a half of Wellness food every day. He was 12 lbs. and very trim. Now, he is gaining weight and you can definately notice it. At least 2 lbs in 3 months. He gets exercise and limited treats and NO table scraps. Im worried because I dont want him having back problems and other health problems, but I still want him to get good nutrition. Any advice?

| I don't think neutering normally leads to weight gain.. but I don't really know for sure. If I were you I would just increase exercise and maybe decrease food if that isn't helping. My friends had a Cocker Spaniel that was the same age as mine and it died when it was 8 because it was overweight. My little man is still going at 15 years. What a big difference.

| The only reason they would gain after neutering, is if they get lazy(same as a female getting spayed, and us even having our tubes tied). |

| Neutering or spaying slows down their metabolism, so it's possible that the weight gain is due to the surgery. I would slightly reduce the amount of food and/or maybe ramp up the exercise.

| My vet told me that I needed to reduce my girl's calories by 1/3 after spaying. I didn't do it and they are both FAT!

They definately can gain weight after altering. Ellie's nutritionist said she would need less calories after her spay.

| Before Sasha got spayed, I was told also that she might gain a little weight because her metabolism would slow down after she got spayed. Now I just make sure she gets plenty of exercise and she doesn't get as much food as she did when she was a puppy. |

| My SIL has 5 doxie's . Three of them are spayed / Neutered and everyone of them gained weight while the other two non spayed girls didn't . She keeps them on a special diet food but they really don't seem to lose any weight. Maybe it's just something about the hormones it changes? I don't know.

| It all depends on how lazy they get. My boy was neutered, 3 years ago and hasn't gained anything since being neutered, and hes' very active. If they eat and then just lay around and don't play in the house or go on walks, they're going to gain weight. |

| I can tell you from experience, that getting their weight under control now is best for them. Many health problems, just like with us, that can arise from being overweight. I had a diabetic Bichon who recently passed, that was on insulin injections for the last three years of his life. Get him out and exercise more, reduce his calories (safely) and you will have a happier, healthier furry friend. My Yorkie gained a bit too much weight, she was getting fat, and we reduced her portions a little bit, and had more running and playing and were able to get her down about 1/4 lb back to where she should be. (I know that sounds like such a small amount, but she is pretty small). It took a few months to do, just to be on the safe side, slow and gradual.

| Spaying definately can lead to weight gain. I spent almost a year hand feeding Feather trying to put weight on her. At 1 year she was spayed at 2.5 lbs. Now she weighs over 3.4 and is getting too heavy. Sounds funny but she has bad knees and the vet said to cut back on her food so she doesn't get any heavier. He said she should not be over 3lbs but now she loves to eat and I sure don't need to hand feed her any longer |
