Spaying definately can lead to weight gain. I spent almost a year hand feeding Feather trying to put weight on her. At 1 year she was spayed at 2.5 lbs. Now she weighs over 3.4 and is getting too heavy. Sounds funny but she has bad knees and the vet said to cut back on her food
so she doesn't get any heavier. He said she should not be over 3lbs but now she loves to eat and I sure don't need to hand feed her any longer
