| Cat Problems? About a year ago, my brother adopted a cat named Sinatra. for himself from a rescue group. He's one of the sweetest cats I've ever seen. Sometimes, I get the impression that he's half dog because he rolls over and always wants his belly scratched. Anyways, at the time when my brother got him, he was living at home in the basement. His job was rather a far drive so he ended up getting an apartment out closer by his job. He of course took Sinatra with him after a week of settling in. He had no problems adjusting to the new territory. Quite some time passed and my brother went through some pretty rough times and ended up having to move back home and back in the basement. When he had his job, he was gone pretty much the entire day, so I'm sure Sinatra slept most if not all of the day while he was gone so when he came home he was wide awake. Lately, my brother has been having a problem with him, constantly waking up either in the middle of the night or early in the morning, meowing and crying constantly, just walking around the basement. My brother will get up and feed him which will satisfy him for a little while, but then he'll start back up again. We're not sure if he just wants his attention (unfortunetely in the middle of the night/early morning, my brother is in no mood to play with him) or if he's bored or if something else is wrong. Its gotten bad that sometimes, he has to lock him in our laundry room in the basement (he puts his litter box & water dish in there of course) and has to shove a pillow under the crack of the door so he doesn't paw at the door and make it rattle. When I got home from work this morning, I found my brother upstairs sleeping on the couch. Sometimes I wonder if Sinatra's just trying to get the best of him. Anyone have any thoughts? I've been considering buying him some kind of play place and maybe that'll keep him occupied? Any advice/thoughts will be greatly appreciated. |

| Ok - I have a few ideas.. here they are: Is Sinatra feeling ok? (vet visit if he's not). What is Sinatra's breed? Is he Siamese or even part Siamese? I had a Siamese for 18 years (he lived to 18!) and he'd wake up EVERY NIGHT at 4:00 am and meow like crazy. When we moved to a time zone 2 hours away, he then meowed every night at 2:00am like crazy. It was just his thing I guess. He was fine. Siamese is a loud breed of cats. OR, perhaps he needs some play time before bed. Give him lots of toys like fuzzy mice to bat around. Or some catnip in a place on the floor for him to go & rub on when he's bored. Or perhaps he needs another cat to keep him company. (I'll bet your brother will like that advise, huh? ) I have 2 cats now (along with my 2 dogs) and they keep each other company. Cats supposedly sleep like 18 hours a day. OH! Here's another thought ... is he Neutered yet? Last edited by MyLadies; 12-09-2008 at 05:02 PM. |

Over a month ago when he went in to the vet to get updated on his shots, he ended up having an upper respiratory infection. The vet prescribed some meds and it cleared up within 2 weeks and he has been fine health wise ever since. He definitely isn't Siamese, looks more just like your general everyday cat. I mean he was rescued so I don't know if it's possible he has some Siamese in him, but he definitely looks nothing like one. He has tons of toys around in the basement that he bats around. He has a habit of batting them under things (the couch & especially under the laundry room door) and unfortunetely we have to keep the laundry room door closed because he knows his food's in there. He'll either go sit on the container where the food is or somehow knock it over. When he's given catnip, he won't sleep forever. Lately, he has been more active since we did have to put him on a diet because he was overweight. He's starting to get rid of some of that extra "blubber" so he has become more active and running around a lot more. My parents would absolutely kill him if he brought home another cat. They didn't approve of him bringing Sinatra home at all. We don't let Sinatra or Sasha interact or play with each other. Sometimes they'll be ok and other times they won't be. Plus at the time when Sinatra was first brought home, we had cockatiels at the time so he definitely wasn't aloud upstairs. They have unfortunetely since then passed but my mom still doesn't want him upstairs because he gets into EVERYTHING and she doesn't want cat hair everywhere. Yes he is neutered as well. That was done about 1-2 months after he was brought home.

| How old is Sinatra? As odd as it sounds, pacing around and yowling at night can be an early sign of a couple of medical problems in cat. Thyroid issues are very common and that kind of behavior can be an early symptom. If it were my kitty, I'd ask a vet to run a little bloodwork just to rule out medical causes before putting it down to behavior.

We wonder if maybe he's just bored at night? or just tries to get on my brother's nerves just so he gives him a little attention. We got him some new toys for x-mas so we're hoping it'll help a little bit. Lately, I haven't been hearing him meow that much anymore so maybe it was just a phase and he's over it. Either that, or he's getting on the right sleep schedule now.

| my two meow at night on and off. My opinion is that he's bored. He's needs a cat tree with things that hang off of it. Put some stretchy toys on doors. I used to have a toy that attaches to the doorway and had a little fuzzy animal thing hanging down and my cat would go crazy for it.
