| Kitchen Remodel I am thinking of remodeling my very tiny kitchen (Maybe 6 feet x 8 feet). I plan on new cabinets, countertops, sink, disposal, and maybe a fridge. All the other appliances are rather new. I'm thinking of knocking down part of one wall, and bumping out the kitchen about 3 feet on one end for a pantry. I plan on new flooring. I will need some lighting and I might splurge and do a wall oven and cooktop rather than having my standard range. I like contemporary styling, maple cabinets. There will need to be some electrical relocated. Does anyone have any idea what a medium end kitchen remodel like this might cost and how long I might expect to have my house and life turned upside down? I don't want a cadillac, but I don't want dirt cheap either. Thanks for any info.

| Do you plan on hiring contractors or doing it yourselves? That effects the price a lot. I'm in Canada so its hard to say a price and depends on how high end you go, it could vary from a couple thousand to tens of thousands. It really depends on your budget and how much you do yourselves. My hubby and I re-did a kitchen in the summer ourselves (actually a whole condo, lol). We spent around $9000 Can to do the the whole condo, flooring, counters, lighting, appliances....... everything was redone and new. |

| I know some towns have stores where it is like wholesale prices (where the contractors buy from), but sometimes, they are open to the public. That might be good if you have one close....you can get top of the line, name brand appliances really cheap....my inlaws did this with their house. Also, if you aren't very handy.......you might what to go with someone else doing it........for the electrical end of it, etc. Sometimes, if you knock out a wall, it needs to be inspected to make sure it is an area that can stand to have the weight shifted around (if that makes sense). - Like when we built our house, it is 3 stories and we had to do some interior walls really thick, that can never been knocked out because they help brace and hold up the other floor. Sometimes, (also depends on your area), you can find people who do this (like small business ads) in your local paper. I know in our local paper, this section is several pages long w/ everything from yard work, remodeling, pools, etc. AND most smaller "mom & pop" stores will have fliers and business cards from people posted that does jobs like these......look at the smaller hardware stores and lumber yards, etc. Good luck and have fun!

| We just bought a lakefront cabin and we have a small kitchen too. We replaced everything and I would say we have, including all new appliances, about $5,000.00 but we did the work ourselves. We tore out all the old cabinets and stripped the room to the bare walls, we bought the unfinished oak cabinets and refinished them ourselves, we tiled the countertops, put in a tin ceiling, new lighting, fresh paint and border...the whole works. It took us about two weeks to get it totally functional again. We packed a cabinet or pantry into every space we had. I'll show the after pictures but you really don't want to see the before pictures...it was so ugly! It may be a one butt kitchen but love it! My best advice would be to shop around, call around and drive around to see what's out there. If you can do some of the work yourself you'll save a bundle. Some areas have day labor places where they can send a retired/out of work electrician or plumber and it will be cheaper than calling one from the phone book. Good luck with your remodel! |

I would of loved to change the cabinets to maple but since we were just fixing up to sell it would not of been worth the added expense.... I love natural state and was happy to be able to get an awesome price on it for the condo. Would of loved to have it in our new house we are having built too but with the builder it would cost a small fortune. | |

| We just got done doing a lot of renovations to our house. Actually today they started installing hardwood floors in my living room and hallway. We saved a lot by doing a lot of it on our own. Also try asking neighbors if they have ever used anyone who does side jobs. We saved over half on our new windows by buying them ourselves and using someone we knew to install them. When we did our kitchen it took about two weeks and that was tearing out a wall and a half and replacing the floor. Just make sure to get a few estimates and make sure to always ask for references so you can see any prior work done by contractors. Also menards and home depot offer many clinics on how to do some things on your own. That where I got a lot of help. |
