i grew up using thought really big heavy duty expensive sewing machines because that was what my granda worked as. Those are actually the ones I know how to operate. I tried small ones and I can't use them. The needles are too think and I'm not used to it. Try for the medium size machines they work better and last longer. I'm not sure of the brands but I will research for you.

let me know if you are having a hard time. I'm a bit rusty but I'm sure I still remmeber a thing or 2.

I make my doggies their clothes and I just use a Singer I bought at Wal Mart. It's a really simple model, but does different stitches. It's really simple and easy to use. I don't think sewing is hard at all. I just have trouble understanding pattern instructions, so I make my own. The instructions have so many "sewing" terms that I just didn't understand them. The ones I've bought seem to be geared for the very experienced and that I'm not.

I have one very similar to this one. Just a couple years older. It is SUPER easy to use and priced right! My problem is that I don't know how to use a pattern! lol I have just made a couple quilts with it.

The first one I bought several years ago at Walmart was a Brother - about $75. It worked for basic sewing and held up for several years of irregular use. But once we started sewing a hour or more a day, it began to have problems with tension.....and the sewing machine shops in the area wanted $75 to fix it. So back to Walmart we went and bought a Singer Ingeniuty for about $200 and it is so much better. It handles daily use without problems....I have had it since April and it has been used very heavily aready and still works perfectly.

I sew on a Ferry Morris that I've had for almost 30 years and it's still kickin'.

My sister is a professional seamstress and always uses Kenmore from Sears for basic sewing.

My mother's a big sewer, and she recommended a Singer. I bought one, but it's uhhhh, still in the box.

Bernina and Husqvarna are really good brands

Of course other company's like singer and brother also make really good machines but you have to be careful becasue they make "High end" and "low end" machines and the cheaper machines sound really loud and break easily. You get what you pay for. My mother is a professional quilter and she always recommends Bernina to everyone and she has been sewing for 30+ years, she loves those machines.

I personally own 2 singers (older models but really nice sewing machines) and a Kenmore sewing machine(also an older model). I am looking into purchasing a Husqvarna Viking computerized embroidery/sewing machine soon though.

I would recommend a simple one but not the basic get a singer or a well known brand as they are usually easier to get fixed if there is a problem. Make sure you get one with a built-in light.
I used to make curtains ,drapes bedspreads etc and you really need a light!!

I totally agree. I have a High end Viking with the embrodery unit. I LOVE it. Bernina makes excellent machines, too. My mother sells them and we are both in quilt guilds.

I started out with a Necchi that my Grandma gave me and I used it for years and years. I bought newer Necchi off of e-Bay recently. They have a cast iron body and a 25 year warranty and they're simple to operate. One of the features that I especially like is that they're a heavy duty machine. They will sew through several layers of denim or upholstry. You might want to take a look at them if you're looking.

My mom has a gambill (sp?) industrial size long arm quilting machine and she quilts for a living. She used to drag me to quilt guild meetings when I was younger. I just do not have the patience to quilt. Ive started 5 quilts and never finished them

I never make it to the "quilting" part, lol

I went to the Dallas quilt show a few months ago and the big trend this year is swarovski stones all over the quilts and I love it. I think I am going to attempt it.

I have a EURO-PRO X I bought it off of HSN or Maybe QVC
I love it it has all kinds off footers(like the ruffler) that you can use and a very easy booklet to help you I have made my Granddaughters many of dresses and a cradle cover.and a formal for ball room dancing. I am no pro it is the machine that really helps it was about $300.00 good luck I recommend this brand of sew machines
