I’ve been trying to live a really healthy life style since last summer. Working out every day. I wouldn’t think as much of this if there were a shot. I’ve taken flu shots the past few years and I’ve not even had as much as a cold. I know, my environment plays a big part not being in the work force or having kids around.

How sad it is we are at this point in a civilized world supposedly

matese 05-03-2020 04:21 PM

It'a going to get worse. I saw on the news last night Smithfield and Tyson closed late April, I believe it was Smithfiled that had 600 cases of workers with Covid virus and reason for the closing. Trump has ordered them to reopen offering safety gear, masks etc. The news reported we could run out off food by the end of the year. I guess it's up to the workers if they want to return. It's to horrifying for me to even think about a food shortage.

Captainzing 05-03-2020 04:43 PM

This is going to be a long long time to ever get back to normal.

matese 05-03-2020 05:29 PM

Very, very true, life as we once knew it is going to change.

Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe.

I think the stroke risk has long been there with flu-like illness. I've heard of that phenomena before. Don't know if it's the enforced bedrest or just a side-effect of having an inflammatory disease process taking over the body that somehow predisposes us to stroke.

Thanks for the link. I did not know that. I thought it was only for Covid 19

From the way the story has been reported, who could tell, always by eliminating further factors associated with stroke, tying it just to Covid 19. Like all of the deaths, even if that disease itself didn't kill but the case of invasive cancer did or a heart attack did, its published as a Covid 19 death. I've never heard, read any report that says that regular flu can also cause an increase risk of stroke. Seems like the media is out to make an even worse horror of Covid 19 than it already is. Why not, every TV program, news internet news service automatically draws more attention these days?

I just wish there was a rhyme or reason to it. How do some 100 year olds survive and 30 year olds die from it

No doubt it depends on each patient's DNA and whether they have the resident ability to even partially fight off the initial attacking virus as well as whatever you might lack in the ability to fight off secondary problems, such as circulatory problems, clotting problems. Then the viral load you first get - just how much of that speck of fluid was infected and how many initial loads of it you took in and whether your strain of it is as hardy as another patient's. Your state of health when you contract it, your early reactions and your medical provider's initial reactions, treatment, whether or not you were able to get further and secondarily infected by your own providers' ability to keep a wholly sterile, safe treatment facility, the providers' levels of adequate staffing, such as whether they accept only top-flight medical staff and nursing applicants, their levels of ability and on and on, What might seem like smart treatment on that patient might turn out to be what opened a larger pathway to their eventual death, together with other complicating conditions, such as older folks have compared to most younger adults and children.

Whatever medications you were taking - could the virus use that against you defenses or as a pathway into your cells or defeating certain immune responses more readily, such as are ace-inhibitors of blood pressure and other medication are suspected to be. Could be a contributing factor to many older patients' higher death rates or maybe anyone of whatever age taking them for HBP, increased circulation.

In 2 years we'll likely have a handle on it but until then, we have to be grateful for the fact that this version of novel coronavirus seems relatively tame compared to how awful it could have been.

Captainzing 05-04-2020 11:15 AM

Or still become if this first round isn’t all of it

matese 05-04-2020 12:55 PM

Second wave is expected to come in Oct.when our Flu season starts and will be twice as bad as what we now have. That is why Governors in many states do not want to reopen non·essential businesses. They feel it's to soon and the second wave will hit us when we don't have this one under control, nor all the supplies or facilities to put these ppl in that are sick now.

Captainzing 05-04-2020 02:12 PM

And there’s going to be some serious shortages on things like meat

matese 05-04-2020 04:41 PM

That's what I saw on my local news, they said we could run out of meat by the end of the year if Smithfield and Tyson doesn't open soon. It's really a pity ppl have to risk their lives so others can live, this is truly a tragedy. I also read ppl are buying chest freezers. I don't remember the name of the freezer company that makes them. I read this company makes about 150,000 a year, now they are on back order. This is getting really scary now.

yorkietalkjilly 05-04-2020 05:36 PM

I am taking so many precautions I just checked my front porch for any deliveries wearing a mask, without even thinking how needless that probably was. Am trying to stay as realistic but positive as possible. But until otherwise healthy, active young people start dying by the dozens, it really doesn't sound like this disease, however contagious it is, is as awful and deadly as the fear it is inducing among us. Every week we have more drive-in testing facilities opening up, more testing kits arrive daily and heard reports there are many more large companies testing privately, a few with home testing kits, so obviously there should be a spike in the number of positive cases reported in all ages, even as we re-open things. But it's the number of actual deaths strictly from Covid 19 leading to the heart stopping from just that disease process alone starting to balloon before we need to be so fearful.

Yes, it is terrible that so many are sick and there are bad side effects for some seemingly healthy people but for all we know in young, healthy, active adults dying, it comes down to pure genetics, leading an otherwise unhealthy lifestyle, dealing with a destructive habit no one knew, that hasn't been yet revealed privately or publicly or developing an underlying medical condition none of us know, even them. Right now, trying not to panic, project fear, living on less of everything we can, leading the safest, most active, healthiest lifestyle(including at dinner/snack time) and above all, staying positive will be our best tools. And staying positive is a true asset of most Americans - unless you work for the media(poster added dryly). Never have seen this story covered by our television or majority of print media yet and had to do a deliberate Google search for the information.

Found this on Google today, was just interested in knowing how many otherwise adults were actually dying from Covid 19, if there were any stats, etc.:

https://www.advisory.com/daily-brief...d-young-people

"According to an analysis of state data by the Washington Post, at least 759 people under the age of 50 in the United States had died from Covid-19 as of Wednesday. The Post identified at least 45 deaths among patients in their 20s, at least 190 deaths among patients in their 30s, and at least 413 deaths among patients in their 40s. The Post noted that the actual number of Covid-19 deaths among people younger than 50 is likely higher, as not all states report Covid-19 deaths by age.

CDC data on more than 1,400 hospitalizations related to Covid-19 shows people under the age of 50 accounted for about 25% of the hospitalizations. Most of those people had other underlying health conditions, but at least seven of them did not, CDC said".

Heard on the news that Pepcid interferes with the virus’ ability to invade and replicate in human cells. Italy reported people who had taken Pepcid had a remarkably quicker recovery that those who had not taken it.

Was also thinking about sunlight and UV rays killing the virus quickly. Bad that most all newer windows block UV rays. If we could let unfiltered sunlight into our homes it would naturally limit the virus, and be available to all who live in homes with windows, free. I’ve also been running my bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans for better air exchange.

yorkietalkjilly 05-04-2020 10:10 PM

Turned from a local sports radio station during ad break to seek another station and found one where adult-sounding males were griping about government harassment in wanting everyone to wear masks when out and about. One guy then called in to say you can tell them it's against your religion or your have a medical condition that your doctor suggests wearing a mask is bad for. So due to privacy laws, no need to disclose what that medical condition is. I turned the radio off! Wish they could all get cited and fined hefty amounts for conspiring to spread a pandemic disease or at least for depraved indifference to its contagious nature! It's especially frustrating when I'd just tried to order some basics am running low on online and the large company was either out of stock or limiting purchases to one!

Lisa and Pic 05-05-2020 06:08 AM

That disgusts me too. I heard on our local news that one KY state representative encouraged protesters to take off their masks at a anti whatever rally. So selfish and hope she gets voted out.

kjc 05-05-2020 06:36 AM

The President did order meat processing plants to remain open under the Defense Production Act last Tuesday. Heard that the initial plants closing supplied 16% of meat production in the US. Problems here in Maryland on the chicken farms with the virus causing problems in production.

My thoughts on testing: I think too much money, importance and resources are being wasted as Covid19 testing can only determine if one has the virus at the exact time the test is done. After a test, one could contract the virus leaving the doctor’s office or could be in very early stage of infection not detected by the test. This test is useful for more actively sick people to determine and plan treatment protocols for the individual. Asymptomatic people won’t be rushing to be tested because they don’t know they are carrying/spreading the virus.

Test, treat, contact tracing is only effective in the very beginning to prevent the spread of any contagious disease. I think we are way past that point. Might be good only for areas with extremely low numbers of infection, but that is assuming no one travels into or out of those areas.

I was involved in a situation back in the 1970’s. An ambulance and the police pulled into our workplace and made anyone who had been within 3 feet of a specific individual was put in the ambulance and taken directly to the hospital, blood drawn and waited for results. They told us nothing. I was released, so assume I was negative and allowed to go home. Very scary. Never heard anything else about it, so again assume disaster was averted.

The antibody test is better as it can identify individuals whose blood can be used to treat those who are actively ill with the disease.

I see this ending with a protocol similar to tuberculosis or flu, where we get tested when we go to the doctor as a routine health screening, and a vaccine when needed and available. Until then, I will be taking any preventative measures I can.

And as for me, I am willing to temporarily give up my civil rights guaranteed by our constitution, to help protect our population until this threat is under control.

yorkietalkjilly 05-05-2020 08:07 AM

Agree with everything you've said. Testing protocols & kit design was argued over by CDC for weeks as to type of test they would sanction, then manufacturers had to order supplies and workers to churn them out, ship them, the test is likely quite costly for government's limited funds, takes licensed labs and technicians to process, time taken to formally notify ordering doctor/patient of the result and only captures that testing moment in the disease in that person. In a huge country like this, testing for 340+ million people sounds like a bonafide pipe dream for this present wave.

Time for every active adult and teen not at work producing goods & services to run our economy to stop Tweeting/Instagramming about & actually show some social responsibility and, when off work, stay apart, not gather for private parties or study, school, fill open beaches, pack lines for goods or protest, vote, religious services, whatever.

The only successful way to stop a contagious but not that fatal disease is to stay apart, wearing protective masks, gloves when around others, until and if we find better ways to diagnose/treat/hopefully vaccinate against Covid 19 and stop the infection cycle. Or our society can learn to live with it, complications, deaths and all, donate where we can, eat less meat and popular foods when supplies are short, and stay as fit as we can. Hard medicine for most Americans, used to behaving pretty much as we'd like when we'd like!

True. This disease seems to "thin" more of the riskier, weaker or less healthy among us as so many diseases have done before . A global society of today can be ready bait for a novel virus first wave. Wonder how many new drugs, labwork and protocols for triage, treatments, etc. will be accidentally/purposefully created and new uses for existing diagnostics, medicines and health care facilities discovered during the worldwide process of working on a Covid 19 vaccine, treatments, etc.? Possibly quicker, more effective treatments for the flu, common cold, pneumonia maybe. Factories, businesses might be safer in the long run for workers.

After taking my mom to many rounds of cancer treatment, I sure hope they find a cure for that while they’re finding a cure for the virus

Wouldn't that be off-the-charts wonderful?!?! A wonderful miracle. We can hope. You sound like a very good son!

Omg!

News tonight: New mutant corona virus strain found on the east coast even more contagious and causing worst symptoms than the original strain. God help us!

Training dogs to sniff out the virus, like dogs that can sniff out cancer and blood sugar changes. Is this really a good idea with a virus that has already jumped species?

That's scary.

yorkietalkjilly 05-06-2020 11:24 AM

Like the flu virus, viruses and bacteria mutate all of the time and medical research labs have to keep adjusting/developing the vaccines, antibiotics according. Hundreds of all strains of virus usually develop over time, like the flu. Some years it kills hundreds of thousands and some years under a hundred thousand. Each usually dies out in time as we develop, slow or fast to that particular strain, immunity and/or effective drug and/or vaccine are created. Still, this virus seems relatively ineffective on healthy people and at its worst its death rate still under 33%, even over age 85, which most patients have more than vital health-risk they are managing, if nothing more than inactivity.

Even lethal viral mutations change, weaken, mix with others as they evolve and become ineffective against the host's immunity or drugs/vaccines kill them or render them much less effective, such as HIV, which began as a certain death virus in its initial forms.

They are slowly opening my county today. All restaurants in Pennsylvania will now be allowed to use out door seating which our governor feels is safer then indoors. Me however lol, will remain on lock down, there will be no eating foods that have not been made by MOI in my home. There is no need for me to enter stores that have a lot of ppl in them. I use instarcart to order and deliver my groceries, anything I may want to buy I buy on line. These feet are not entering any store or restaurant until this virus is out of the US. Unfortunately there are times I do need to venture out in my car, but I have my mask for public places. If it means changing my life style and mask wearing becomes a must, this is what I am ready to do. I want my fur baby to live out his life with me, not with a new mom, or living forever in a kennel because he will be considered a senior and not many ppl want them.
