My thought was that you might get me but I'm going down fighting. As crazy as our world has become a lot of people will be thinking about getting a CHL. If you are one of those thinking about it, please look into taking a gun/shooting course. It's not just about taking one class to obtain a license, it's practice, practice, practice and situational awareness! (There is a group called A Girl and A Gun that has chapters in so many states, it's a great place to start and learn.) I don't think everyone should carry a weapon just because they took one class, that can be just as dangerous.

Our local area has changed our porch lights to blue to show our support of the officers that put their life on the line everyday.

And now I'm off to clean my arsenal.....

So very sorry about your loss, your stepsister. How tragic for you and your family, her loved ones....."just another statistic", another innocent, productive human snatched from a loving family, by a ner-do-well, a misfit from society, an angry, self absorbed individual that has a sense of entitlement, believing his own self importance and existence is more important than anyone else around him.....I am sorry your family had this encounter, and I pray this person received his just rewards.

Like you, I was in nursing school, a little before your young life adventures, back in 1969. My father was traveling in his position in the oil industry, so my mother was raising my brother and I here in Houston. Nursing school kept me on the roads from 5am until after midnight....first with our hospital duty, then we had class at college after an 8 hour shift, for 4 hours, then there was study/homework time with classmates.....I have never worked so hard and hated it so much, as I did those years!!! One night coming home at 2am, at the tender age of 21, I was chased by a car load of boys....thank God, as I flew through Pasadena, a police officer saw me driving at 80 mph in a 35 mph zone, with a carload of men in hot pursuit......this event turned out well, at least for me. When it was all resolved and over, that officer as well as others (and I do remember you clearly Officer Womack, even after all those years!!!), encouraged me to get a gun if I was going to be on the streets at that hour. Back then, there was no license to carry, and thank God, my father had already taught me how to use a gun very effectively, since I was 8 years old.....so I bought me a S&W 38 that I carry to this day! I have carried that weapon for so many years, it is like wearing clothes....I have it on me at all times....it is like a very old, dear, trusted friend! I have over the years bought many more weapons....I consider them dear, trusted friends that I can depend on with my life. When it became law we needed to have a license to carry, I was in one of the first classes in this area, where they were amazed "that a girl could shoot and hit a target", actually, out shooting my entire class! But this is no amazing feat, I have been shooting for 58 years now, and I carry with all the comfort and ease that a person has wearing underware! As you have said, I strongly encourage everyone to learn how to effectively carry a gun. Take classes, get lethal with your accuracy.....the police are woefully outnumbered and chances are, ESPECIALLY with the deterioration of our civilized social situation, you are going to be faced with a situation where you will be wishing you had a comfortable, loving, effective relationship with a gun. Not so you can run around like "Two Gun Toucan Pete", but so you will escape alive, a situation you have been put in, by someone that means you nothing but harm. You MUST stay vigilant and completely aware of your surroundings at every second....know where you are, who is around you, always formulate in your brain, an escape path from any position/situation you are in. Paranoid??? You bet, and if that wonderful officer had been just a little less comfortable in his surroundings, he would have had a situational awareness and seen that thug walking up on him....not that it would have made any difference in HIS case.....that thug was out to kill a white cop, and unfortunately, police can not draw their weapon just because someone is walking up on them.

People MUST be aware and understand that police are sitting ducks now, with an entire portion of society "gunning" for them, openly encouraging and chanting it in the streets, painting it on any flat surface they can find, enthusiastically encouraging violence against police officers.....and then people wonder why police officers are getting super vigilant and overly cautious, even "jiggy" and jumpy???? They are walking around with a badge on their chest and cross hairs on their backs. They never know if this next sassy mouthed, arrogant, defiant, overly animated, loud, argumentative person they have just stopped for whatever reason, is the one that is a cop hater and going to try to end their life. People need to understand that.....may not like it, may resent the officer taking up their time for a traffic violation, but keep your mouth SHUT, do what they tell you to do, and take it up afterwards where the threat of a life or death challenge to that officer, is non existent. It will end up a lot better for both you and the officer.

Also, I've been told that after January 1, when open carry becomes law, it will be more difficult to get a CHL. I take that to mean that there will be more to learn for the test.
No reason why OC would make it harder to get a CPL? But I would rather conceal carry and keep it a surprise vs OC. Some disagree . But Just because he has his doesn't mean that all you need. The back up is always good. Im my area the gangs and crime , assaults or killing everyday. Not just guns. More knives then anything

I'm just guessing, but I think it will be more difficult because there will be additional material to cover and learn for the test.

I agree with you regarding open vs concealed carry. Keep it a surprise.

Totally agree that *some* cops are total thugs/bruts and are really the root cause of the disastrous state we're in, sadly. The cops need to harness their own people and they should NOT ever stand for their own going rogue - they need to get those people who can't handle being cops off the force and/or get them some help. The thug cops are making being a GOOD cop a very deadly thing...and until that gets fixed, there will be unrest, tragically.

I can't stand hearing of cops being shot at / executed as a result of all this unrest. It's beyond tragic and sad.

PS. What is a "CHL"?

GREAT little weapon!! I have one....have 2 actually! I was even a gun dealer for about 5-6 years....was able to actually own my own gun business (Wright's Gun Gallery!) and did manage to get numerous ladies/nurses trained to shoot effectively and they purchased weapons from me.....let that business go when people that were shot as they tried to kill another person, or as they were shot breaking into businesses and homes, were then able to turn around and sue not only the person that was defending their property, but the gun dealer the gun was purchased from, as well as the the actual manufacturer of the gun! So it would seem the laws in this country are all slanted in favor of the crooks and crazies that are causing the problems....concerns for THEIR rights!!!

I am not sure I will ever open carry....I would rather not let the bad guy know I am armed...let it be a surprise to him!

I carry a stun gun due to fear for me and my service dog. Especially from other loose, large dogs. The stun gun has a nasty jolt to it, can take a grown man to the ground and keep him there.

It truly is a shame that some of our cops are so awful. Many aren't, but the number that are.. :/ I am not a cop hater either, not at all, and I'm not dangerous, but I AM scared of what is happening with our law enforcement.

Could it be a reaction to so many of the citizens they deal with are so awful - with nasty attitudes and weapons, ready to kill, that have them in fear for others' as well as their own lives? Cops go into the very worst of situations, see people at their very worst. Cops aren't usually called unless there is big trouble and they are the last line of public defense.

And am I wrong but aren't all but one or two of the cop shootings done when the suspect was actually in the act of resisting arrest, brandishing a weapon or actually assaulting the officer? I don't think any amount of officer training can help keep a man or woman cool and collected in that moment when they are in actual fear for others' lives being lost because they failed to act or in fear for their own life, knowing that if they go down themselves, not only could they die in those next few moments but the suspect will very likely take their weapons and be loosed on the public - a menace to the whole city until caught.

Seems like cops have a dangerous, thankless job and only a few of us are even willing to try to do take that job on - even fewer if this latest cop-hater climate keeps growing, with citizens marching in the street chanting slogans about wanting "cops dead now" and "fry pigs in a blanket", while their very lives are being protected from those who would silence them as they march by officers standing on the line. And then it will be us vs. the out-of-control criminals - who have no empathy for any of their victims of the moment.

There are far more good cops then bad. If you knew what they had to go through day in and day out. FWIW Stun gun and Tasers. Aren't very reliable. I've seen many fail. I wouldnt depend on it to keep most ppl down. Thats the reason when you see a Cop with a Taser he doesn't use it unless hes covered by another with a firearm. My Family is full of Military and Leos.

“The revolution is on… Off the pigs,” and “Oink Oink… Bang Bang!,” was the message leveled by the heavily armed Black Panthers directly at Harris County deputies who had been asked by the Waller County Sheriff to come out to help keep the peace. Pigs in a blanket", "kill the pigs".....
And the police are expected to just take these threats and not get nervous and jiggy???

.......Boy.....this is quite revealing of exactly where this country is headed. Dont see anyone from the White House or Washington, enraged and on TV denouncing THIS rhetoric....where is the President? Where is the Attny. General? This kind of civil disobedience and hate mongering and "baiting" needs to be stopped or blood is going to be running in the streets of this country. Texas is being descended upon at this moment by hate filled militants, specifically white lives being threatened....somebody better get a grip on this inflammatory speech and militant, out of control thugs inciting riots and advocating murder of white people/cops......this country is descending straight into Hell.....

I am sorry you have such a bad impression of the police. There are always some bad people out there in any group. You cannot judge all people by the actions of some. Having been a rape victim and having been attacked by a neighbor who also attacked two other neighbors I am more scared of the violent people out in the world than of the police. I do believe with body cameras there will be more accountability for the police but what about accountability for the thugs. Two wrongs never make a right. Stun Guns may send them to the ground for a few minutes but be prepared to run for help and if not to a policeman who is going to be there to help you?

And now, just across the screen, "a police officer in Ga has been shot responding to a call....taken to the hospital in critical condition". I guess it has started, hasn't it......

And another in Fox Lake, IL, murdered in a routine traffic stop. Big manhunt underway for three men.

Just heard a Chicago police officer has been shot, his weapon taken and 3 suspects loose on the public now with nothing to lose. Please God don't let them run into a mother and her kids on the way home from daycare or the grocery store! We don't know the officer's condition - whether it's a flesh wound, head wound or he's going to be paralyzed as swelling and nerve damage sets in and can never work again.

In a world where seemingly one-third the teenagers usually carry a weapon of some kind - mainly probably to try to keep themselves safe from compatriots who are also armed and at least some to fight off cops - and with little judgement at their young age, it's got to be so hard for a cop to know whether or not he's dealing with a kid with little judgment or an adult and either could be strung out on drugs. Today many teens look like full-grown adults, already 5' 10" and over in height and often already filled out and muscular by the age of 15 or 16! How can a cop tell he's dealing with a teen, an adult or whether he's unarmed in a split second of panic when at a huge portion of the male teens seem to be carrying some kind of deadly weapon on his person.

I wonder how long are best cops will even bother to stay on the force with the many pressures foisted on them by politics, some of their own city governments and media hype today. If I were a cop, I think I'd seriously considering quitting and go into private security or some other line of work rather than lay my life on the line knowing not only are so many thoughtless teens out there for me to possibly face down but a whole genre of cop-hating anarchist types who don't like that their brothers, husbands and sons keep getting shot while involved in some type of fight with an officer on what seems like a routine encounter on the face of it.

High School Students Carrying Weapons | Child Trends

Bear in mind, the third carrying weapons are teens in school! In some communities, few of the teens attend school and one can rationally assume that an even larger percentage of those teens carry deadly weapons, as at least a portion of them likely trade in drugs and robbery to make money they can't otherwise come by!

P. S. Update: Just heard on CNN, the officer shot in Chicigo is dead at the scene while his killers are still on the loose WITH HIS WEAPON plus any of their own weapons and the public at their mercy!

End of watch 9-1-2015 and R.I.P., Officer. Prayer to your family, friends and brothers in arms.
