| job interview-surprise surprise Hi all, I was offered the job this morning.......but....they offered me 5000 less than what I had asked for...then we talked about parking in their area and I found out it would cost me 2200 to 3600 a year for parking in addition to gas and tolls. Whew that is a chunk out of my pay. He said that with bonuses I would make well over my asking rate but I wanted my bonuses to be in addition to my salary not just to cover my commuting exp and the additional time we have to work during busy season. They do have benefit plans but I have never reveived benefit of them from any emloyer (got screwed by one company when the boss died). They also have health ins but they would have to reimbuse me for mine and not sure if they do that. I asked him if I could give it some thought and get back to him by tomorrow and he said ok. I am wondering if he is taking advantage of my age by offering less and in addition the cost of parking is outragous....then also I would be away from my furbabies more cause of the longer hours and commute...that coupled with less money does not make it look too attractive to me. Just trying not to do something I will kick myself in the butt for. Am I passing up a good offer or am I blinded by my need to be employed? Thanks for reading and please do comment. Tina

| Do you currently have a job? I guess it all depends on how bad you need it. If you don't absolutely need the job, I would counter with salary you originally asked for and walk away if they balk.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Offer to take some % point off your bonuses if they will yield on the annual salary. Actually thinking about this, it might be best to that one counter, then offer another counter you are willing to pay the extra gas time etc, as long as you get a parking pass so that parking is free for you. Parking is going to be after tax dollars you are paying out while the other two things are before tax and will then be taxed at what-ever your marginal tax rate is.. Just do the math. So the annual salary is $5000 less if your marginal tax rate is 30% you would not have $3500 net dollars. But the parking at the top end is $3600 a year. If you really want this job, another counter might be, working from home 2 days or so a week. Don't know the job so don't know if that is possible. Now think about your counter offers. Emphasis you have no problem and adore the challenge of earning your bonuses, but you do understand in this economy things can be challenging. So here is what I think is fair for both of us.....>>>>> and then pitch your counter offer. Alternatively you can if truly not interested in the job, just say I am very sorry but I can't see my way clear at this time to take this economic shortfall. Then see how the conversation ensues.

| Hi all... Thanks for your replies. I decided to take the job. I do this because of 2 other things that "working" will help me with. One is that I might be able to refinance my mortgage next year (if all works out well) which is one of the reasons I decided to go to fulltime work. And he did say at the interview that there is a review every year. So if we are happy with each other I think it is nice to give him the benefit of starting me at a rate he feels is comfortable and if he does not make me cry at my yearly review then maybe he will bring me up a little closer to where I would like to be. These employers know a lot of my past employers that I worked for a long time (on a subcontractor basis) pretty well so I am hoping that I will like these employers as much as my old employers (whew). And if I do it may be worth the risk of taking less to start. The only real drawback is that I will have about a 45 min to an hour commute each way (bedsides the expense) and that will take time from the furbutts. BUt I am hoping to only work 3 more years fulltime then go part time. And the furbutts do cost money to keep them healthy so I guess/ hope maybe the risk will work for that best. But anyho thanks again for sharing your thoughts...I always come here to get unconfused, lol. Have a great evening Tina

| Congrats on the new job! If you are only looking short term (3 years) then you can do anything for that little time, and the fur-butts will be ok too. Sorry to hear its not ideal, but happy to hear you found a job!!

| Sounds good and the furbutts do have eachother to keep company which is a plus! Don't worry all will be well!
