Offer to take some % point off your bonuses if they will yield on the annual salary. Actually thinking about this, it might be best to that one counter, then offer another counter you are willing to pay the extra gas time etc, as long as you get a parking pass so that parking is free for you. Parking is going to be after tax dollars you are paying out while the other two things are before tax and will then be taxed at what-ever your marginal tax rate is..

Just do the math. So the annual salary is $5000 less if your marginal tax rate is 30% you would not have $3500 net dollars. But the parking at the top end is $3600 a year.

If you really want this job, another counter might be, working from home 2 days or so a week. Don't know the job so don't know if that is possible.

Now think about your counter offers. Emphasis you have no problem and adore the challenge of earning your bonuses, but you do understand in this economy things can be challenging. So here is what I think is fair for both of us.....>>>>> and then pitch your counter offer.

Alternatively you can if truly not interested in the job, just say I am very sorry but I can't see my way clear at this time to take this economic shortfall. Then see how the conversation ensues.
