Grammatical errors...add your favorites! alot ==> a lot (A lot of people combine the two words for some reason. Think of the opposite...a little.:)) |
The one that just *bugs* the living crap out of me is when people say/write "taken back" in place of taken aback. The phrase is "taken Aback". taken aback = surprised etc ("I was taken aback by the audience's reaction") taken back = the act of returning ("I was taken back to the entrance") |

Another one that I hear all of the time is improper verb tenses. I seen that movie before or I drunk some coffee last night. I've seen or I have seen...I drank!!! |
I hate when people use "could of" instead of the proper phrase, "could have". There are many, many more, but I can't think of them at the moment:laugh: |

some of those that drive me crazy are... gonna (no comment necessary) accept and except (really??? get it together with this word, please) cannot (even I don't know this one anymore) census and senses - (two very different words...) let alone I have several..........I'll be back.... |
Your is possession you're is you are. Ie.... Your so smart. Uh no, that would be you're so smart. Lol |
You hear this all the time, even on TV news, high-paid taking "heads", "experts", etc.: "Oh, that's a whole nother problem!" |
Ohhhh boy do I have a lot of these that bug me! Including the ones that have been mentioned already! I hate when people write to instead of too! I also hate improper apostrophes or none at all. "I have a lot of cat's" "My cats walking down the stairs" and it seems that hardly anybody understands a possession with a plural word. If you have two parents, you are not going to your parent's house, you are going to your parents' house. I knew a guy I talked to online a lot, but had never met in person (my cousin's ex - my cousin and I are best friends but we live far apart!) Anyways, his grammar and spelling were absolutely AWFUL. I had to think about and decipher what he was trying to say. I told my cousin later after meeting him in person that I was actually blown away by how eloquent he was in real life. It was like he was a totally different person than the one I had in my head! And that brings me to being glad I met my husband in real life before seeing him write or type :D I am trying so hard to hold back and not correct him so much anymore. But it bothers the heck out of me when he writes "will" instead of "we'll" or "we will" I ask him a question and he responds with "will see" and I rip my hair out  I have a friend who has been looking for a job for a month, and she doesn't understand the importance of good grammar and spelling in a cover letter. They are just awful :( She sent me one at work asking if she had all the content she needed. I said yes, but I told her I will edit it on my lunch break for her... She just said "no that's okay I just want to send it off asap" It had spelling mistakes and the name of the company was not even capitalized. She has sent out at least 20 or 30 resumes and has not even had a call back. |
Conversate, it's converse or we had a conversation, I hate it when I hear someone say "we conversated". |
Yes, an apostrophe does NOT make things plural! |
How about mixing up the definitions for there and their? Drives me crazy. |

Also, Iit bothers me when people say pronounce "probably" as "probly" and even moreso, when people type "prolly" |

One that 'gets' me, lol... prolly instead of probably. And I love the phones that make auto corrections... hilarious! On the weather channel, they went through a phase of using 'long-live' or 'long-lived' , but it was more their pronunciation, long or short 'i'? One newscaster started using it, then they all seemed to be using it, with a long 'i' vowel sound, which does not sound 'right' to me. Drove me nuts! Now, I notice, no one is using it, lol. Then there's maresey dotes and doesey dotes and little lambsey divey, a kidlley divey too wouldn't you? When I explained that to DH, he cracked up... he never knew! |
Oh another one just popped in my head! When people use an acronym, and then the last word from the acronym, such as "ATM machine" or "SIN number" Oh you want my social insurance number number? |
nuff said! |

you left out... or not to be... |
another one I get all the time... you don't know what I means.... Yes I know what you mean, you don't like what I've just explained to you and somehow you think I will change all the rules for you....yeah that is not going to happen.... |
I especially like when they forge/create a counterfeit document and expect me to accept it with all the errors and the signature of a person who died 22 years ago! Love it! Some languages the v sounds like a b....and they spell it like that when they forge documents....examble.... Grover Cleveland= Grober Clebeland....this one sends me to hysterics! Love it! Ok, I can go on and on, I will end my hijacking/venting now! |

Another one: I could care less. How much less could you care? You must care a lot! It should be couldN'T care less. |
Im guilty! I write the way I talk sometimes which is southern but if I write a formal letter I try to have good grammer. So with me I guess it just matters if I am writing something official or leisure |
Hahahahahaha! Just had a great one! My secretary calls me for help, theres a skinny blond hair 15ish boy, Justin Bieber looking kid, standing in front of her desk giving her a hard time, I go up and ask him what he wants, he starts explaining and I tell him to STOP, you can only do this at school with your guidance counselor and right now you should be in school! Large letters on the door say TRUANT Office, I tell him he is truant and has 5 seconds to leave or he is being detained...HE LOOKS AT ME SERIOUSLY, says well if I'm being truant why are you giving me a hard time? I then tell him what truant means and he looks at me and says "Miss, your not hearing me" really? Ugggghhhh, this is a newer statement they use instead of saying "I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say" etc., if I had a nickel for every time a student says "Your not hearing me" I'd be rich! I'm so glad it is Friday! |
I still will never understand how one does not know your and you're differences. This one is my biggest pet peeve. |
