I'm fine with tho and other text message/internet shortcuts in spelling as they are a tech-y issue and not poor spelling or grammar.

kdkjoshi 10-06-2013 09:50 PM

Im suprised that no one said this one yet.

Bred vs. Bread

My worst are their, there, they're and two, to, too.

And it's an IDEA, not an IDEAL. You do not get a great ideal.

And there's the whole "I" vs "ME" in a sentence. My son's teacher told him is is always "I". She argued with me. (or should I say she argued with I?)

That is the one that makes me yell at the TV every time. It seems to be more and more often that it is used wrong. ie: "Property Brothers" on HGTV-Jonathan says "meet Drew and I at your house" every single time!! Are you going to meet I at your house or are you going to meet me? It is on the news, on sitcoms, on commercials...does no one understand that is incorrect??? Another example: He brought the cake to Sally and I. Did he bring I a cake or me? That is how I was taught to determine which one to use. Remove the other pronoun and repeat the sentance. Does it still make sense? Say it the other way and see if it sounds better. That is your answer. (sorry-it is REALLY a pet peeve of mine  )

I am surprised at how often people use then instead of than. I see it on business websites, in product instruction manuals, and so many places that you would think someone should be proof reading.

I t doesn't bother me when someone makes a mistake, not all of us have had the chance to get a good education. However, when a TV announcer and many do say 'Putin he is causing problems in, instead of Putin is, than that is really unforgivable.

Also one thing I do hate is when someone from the U.S. corrects someone for spelling colour this way. Most of Europe uses a 'u' with words ending in 'or'

btw, I am from Ohio.:)

I read a lot, so I have a tendency to spell things in the European way...orthopaedic, colour, behaviour, analogue, moustache...

yorkietalkjilly 10-07-2013 12:43 PM

I think most anyone today can readily get an education if they want it, with home, online, CD/DVD and special TV network courses flourishing for those that can't attend daytime or evening classes in the flesh. I notice the "him/her and I" incorrect usage as objective pronouns so frequently today. It's as if the word "me" has been deemed uncouth or something except, gulp, as a subjective: "him/her and me seen this guy coming down the street"(sic). Apparently many don't always properly conjugate a verb either.

Good for you.:)

I can't remember for the life of me how to spell definitely. I have no idea why, but I've tried for years and get it wrong every time. lol I always spell it like this >>> definatly <<< and have spell check fix it. No matter what I try, I just cannot drill the correct spelling of that word into my head.

I am so guilty of this, don't know why...but I have always confused these two.

Bellabean 10-07-2013 06:54 PM

" I borrowed him the money"
Their, there and they're
To, too
Accept, except
Adding 'ed' to words that are already past tense

Christinee 10-07-2013 07:04 PM

I don't have none.

He don't have any.

Think you could try to remember that it has the word "finite" right in the middle of it? Like dilemma - I try to remember that Di and Emma are in a dilemma together and it helps me remember how to spell the word. I think of the two s's in supersede as being like the two s's in supersonic for some reason and that helps me always spell it right.

It's like a mental block I have for that word. Kind of like some people can't say the R's well or some people can't wiggle their ears. I can't spell definitely. lol

But supercede is a word.

If someone gets in front of you in line, he supercedes you.

And as an afterthought. I hate text speak.

yorkietalkjilly 10-08-2013 08:32 AM

Supersede is still only a variant spelling and technically wrong but so many people have misspelled it over the centuries, dictionaries have added it as they do as language "evolves".

dollydoodle 10-08-2013 08:54 AM

"Supposabbly". For fun my sisters & I pronounced it with the B for a few days & it really rolls off the tongue nicely-it was tricky to get back to "supposedly".

Lynzy, I almost laughed myself silly over that post of yours - even though I felt bad about laughing! And then I got hungry from all the bread talk. Oh my! I'm sorry - couldn't help myself! Guess I'm for it with mods, myself, now. :hide2:

Marhcarter 10-08-2013 03:42 PM

In the ED, people here in the south have a lot of vomikkin' instead of vomiting (after they are nauserated, of course) and they get "pancre-itis" instead of pancreatitis. And like Annie (dollydoodle) said, after saying it wrong a bunch of times (in jest), it becomes hard to say it right again! There are many, many more...in fact there are whole web sites dedicated just to the funny stuff people say in the ED...but those are among my top 5.:D
The doctors laugh at my triages because I put in quotes exactly what the patient tells me. Who am I to assume what they meant to say? :yelrotflm

gemy 10-08-2013 03:57 PM

How about quick, quicker, and is there a quickest? And when to use quick versus, fast, faster, fastest?

HA I don't know the answer to the above. But usually I hear quicker used in sentences I personally would use faster, and certainly fastest versus quickest!

Would you say " I was the quickest of the group" or I was the fastest of the group"?

Ohmygosh - I'm so ingrained into spelling supersede correctly that I misspelled the variant- spelling "supercede" with the incorrect "c" in it that I should have typed in the above post in trying to make my point that it - "supercede", is only a variant spelling and not the correct spelling of the word to grammar purists. My parents, teachers would have reamed me out if I'd ever spelled the word supercede rather than supersede growing up.

lynzy420 10-08-2013 04:13 PM

is funner a word?

Wylie's Mom 10-09-2013 07:49 AM

I've probably said this a hundred times, but one of my biggest peeves is when people say:

"I was taken back when she said that" instead of "I was taken ABACK".

Ohhhhh lordie that one just gets my back up in the worst way! I don't know why, but it does.
