| Need help with medication I have a 15yr old dog that has decided that he doesn't want to take his Tramadol for pain. Im sure that it taste bitter and that he can smell it. This is what we have tried to hide it in over the past year and how it has gone. Peanutbutter-forget it Pill pockets-not American cheese-even if there are several pieces of cheese to discuise it,he will eat all but the one piece containing the Tramadol. Ginger cookies-eats cookie, spits pill out Hotdog-ate every piece except the one containing the pill. Any ideas?!! He obviously hurts, there isn't another choise for pain meds that wouldn't totally distroy his liver. He weighs about 64lbs,in his best days he weighed 70lb. Sever hip displacia, but can still get his fanny off of the floor and out the door to pottie. When he was younger,I could place a pill on the floor, say "eat it" and he would, but this one must REALLY taste bad. I am so frustrated!!! Last edited by My lil friend; 10-10-2011 at 11:31 AM. |

| does he not like peanut butter is that why it doesnt work because you can put the pill in it and put it on the roof of his mouth and he will most likely swallow it. I just put the pill way back in their mouth and basically force them to swallow it if everything else fails. Usually I can get mine to take it with cheese or peanut butter

| He weighs 64lbs! 15yrs of age. Used to be 70lbs. You cannt pry his mouth open with a crowbar, believe me I have tried. This is NOT a little yorkie,he is a big boy and I am not going to stick my hand in his mouth. He would never bite me on purpose, but he is old and senile, and it has come close to happening. While struggleing to pry his mouth open. His hips and legs may have become weak but his jaws work just fine. |

| I have heard of that method Chachi spoke about but w the squirt cheese in a can. You put the pill in the squirty cheese and then put it on the roof of his mouth.

| I don't know if this will help at all. With our Lab I get about 5 or six pieces of cheese or boiled cubes of chicken. I hide the pill in one. I rapidly have her catch the treats. But I do it twice. Once in the morning and once in the evening before her meal when she is hungry I feed the pill stuffed one in the evening. Lily does not expect a trick because she got all treats before. I change it around because she takes meds daily. By having her catch in the air her nose is pointing to the sky so she gulps and swallows no chewing or tasting.

| Big or small, prying the mouth open is important to be able to do to your animals. If none of those foods work, why not just try the liquid (you can squirt it in his cheek pouch)? It's very yucky tasting though.

| If he is so much pain that he needs meds to live semi-comfortably then I would let him go. That to me is the most humane thing to do for a senior dog. 15years is good life for a large dog with a good owner. Give him another week or two, see if he'll accept a pill but forcing him at this point isn't what I'd reccomend. Dogs are smart and maybe this is his way of telling you it's time. I know that it's hard to even think such a thing, but I know that it's a choice I would make for so that my dog could be 'free'.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Odd, I'm having the same problem with my 14-year-old Lab. Hates Tramadol. I like Theresa's suggestion, but if he's not a catcher, we've had luck putting it in a pill pocket and then getting his meal ready. Just as you're putting his meal down, hand him the pill pocket. With my Lab, he gulps down the pill pocket quickly so he can get to his food. I've also had luck just putting it in with his food. As a last resort, I'm able to pry his mouth open and poke it down.

| Teddy has to take anticonvulsant medication every 12 hours. We have had many battles over it and when I see a little white pill stuck to his beard I know who has won......All that being said, green peas (canned, no salt added) mushed in my hand and with the pill hidden have made pill time a pleasurable experience for us both. He comes running if I say "Teddy do you want your Meddy?" because he knows it means peas are coming. Go figure.

| Squeeze cheese is a good idea! I will try that. We have put it in his food,in his food mixed and hidden in american cheese. He cannt catch food anymore, damage to his tongue and caterachs. We are considering "letting him go" ,the quandry is this. He still trys to play with the puppy (I just pray that he doesn't fall on her),he will still sometimes gallop across the backyard (3 steps worth),he can still get up as long as he isn't on tile. He does occassionally step on the tops of his back feet,,nerve damage from his hips. He just doesn't want to take that one pill. He actually takes the Prevacot just fine. Thank you for your ideas and honesty. We know that the day is coming for him to leave us and we are pretty sure that it isnt very far off. I am just trying to make sure that his last days are as comfortable as possible. |

| Khloe is horrible at taking pills, and even with a treat... she will eat the treat and spit out the pill. I now have to force the pills down her throat. I just hold her between my knees while I kneel on the floor and pry her mouth open. If you drop it far enough near the back of their throat, their natural reaction will be to swallow it. I guess it depends if you are able to do this with a larger dog

| When Callie had to take Tramadol there was no way I could get her to take it. We tried cheese, peanut butter, ice cream, cream cheese, I tried crushing it and mixing it with water and putting it in her mouth with a syringe and I tried putting it far back in her mouth holding it closed tilting her head up and not a darn thing worked. When I mixed it with water I got that thrown back in my face and when I put it in her mouth and tilted her head back she absolutely would not swollen and when she finally did the pill didn't go down and she spit it right back at me. I wish you luck and hope you find something that works.
