Odd, I'm having the same problem with my 14-year-old Lab. Hates Tramadol. I like Theresa's suggestion, but if he's not a catcher, we've had luck putting it in a pill pocket and then getting his meal ready. Just as you're putting his meal down, hand him the pill pocket. With my Lab, he gulps down the pill pocket quickly so he can get to his food.

I've also had luck just putting it in with his food. As a last resort, I'm able to pry his mouth open and poke it down.
