| bad news and good news Today I went to the rheumatologist today. Good news: though she did a lot of blood work and xrays today, she doesn't think I have rheumatoid arthritis. Bad news: Diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Get official results in a couple of weeks. Time for research.

| Oh, btw she sd something that aggravated me. When she told me about the fibromalgia, she sd "it's nothing you can get disability for" I told her I was not worried about that. Is it common now for dr's to think everyone wants disability? Jim thinks it was because he had on a tshirt that did nto look new.

I was told on first meeting with a rheumatologist that "I was stoical", quote: RA people are very stoical, so please ask for pain meds as you need them. I was quite surprised and also insulted, for he knew nothing of me, and I am not my "disease". I have no idea about the health system in the US but yes here in Canada you can eventually qualify for disability after jumping through the requisite hoops and tests, and doctor sign off's etc. There are some good on line sites for persons with fibromyalgia. Some relief is found through aerobic exercise. Swimming is often cited as an excellent activity. Also talk to your regular doctor, about vitamins and supplements that will support the immune system. Visualizations and meditation are other activities that have proven beneficial for this and other chronic conditions. Oh yes also look at your Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium intake. Health Canada is in the process of upping the RDA for the above.

I take calcium and vitamin D due to osteoporosis (I have multiple current and past fractures). I will be doing more walking but I have a phobia about water so that is out. I looked at the symptoms online and now I know that many things I experience are caused by this including my very thin (balding really) hair. Thanks for the comments and suggestions. If you have anymore, pls share.

Beyond meditative and visualization exercises, try a gentle yoga class, stretching out stiff muscles and joints can feel really good (especially afterwards) Here in Toronto we have a woman's only hydrotherapy spa, I've been trying to go once a week. That might not work for you if you are very phobic about water. Alternating cold and different types of warm to hot baths, plus a eucalptus steam room, and a sauana I love that place You can try the Arthritis society of the USA - I'm sure their website would be a good starting off point to find other organizations that support Fibromyalgia. Massage is very good as well. Diet is another big ticket item you can investigate. Copper bracelets Infrared Beds. The list can go on. But do make sure your bed is very good, quality of sleep is so important. We some years ago got a memory foam type mattress. We probably next year will be looking at another mattress.

| My mother has fibromyalsia. She was diagnosed with MS and did meds for like 10 years for MS.... then she was diagnosed with RA (like you) and did those meds for 2 years, they were making her sick and conflicting with her MS meds.... finally she moved to New Mexico, saw a new neurologist. He did the whole battery of tests again after 10 years and found that she had neither MS or RA and in fact had fibromyalsia. She now takes a ketamine suspension med, liquid 4x a day and once a year she gets needles in her back (shes under for this and it does not hurt her) that cut and cauterize the nerves that are sending the pain signals. This worked wonders for her. She was in such severe pain for sooooo long and now she's like a whole new person! I think Fibro might be better than RA or MS diagnosis, at least it was for my mom, she's back to normal now pretty much but yes, she'll need her meds and this needle procedure for the rest of her life.

| I def think that the fribo dx is better than ra or ms. I am just glad to have a diagnosis. Does that make sense? When I say I am hurting people ask what is wrong and I have always just sd I do not know, I just do. I have traumatic arthritis in my ankle from a motorcycle wreck back in 1983. I broke it and it did not heal right. So I limp, and that has twisted my back. I aways just thought that was my pain problem. I have been doing a lot of research. So many of the symptoms that hubby and I looked at fit me to a T. Thanks everyone for the comments.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | It's wonderful news if you don't have RA. Fibromyalgia can be a real pain (no pun intended) to live with -- but can be managed for many patients if they take good care of themselves. I have two family members with FM -- as long as they get plenty of rest, eat properly, careful but diligent exercise when feeling well - (the way ALL of us should take care of ourselves regardless) - they cope with the FM quite well. Only time they have problems is when they have stress -- problems on the job, illness or death in the family, etc. We try very hard not to have drama in the family - that's probably better for all of us as well. It takes a certain level of maturity from the patient NOT to use the FM as an excuse to avoid helping with the chores, etc. And more maturity in the rest of the family to accept that when the patient says she cannot do something, she truly cannot. And to not make undue demands or try to lay guilt on her. I hope with this diagnosis you will be able to manage your symptoms and get back to a normal life. |

| Just curious, has your Dr checked your thyroid ? T3's & T4's. I was misdiagnosed for most of my life with many diff things. Each time I was checked for thyroid (regular thyroid panel)It wasn't till almost 4 yrs ago I went to a diff Dr who added the T3's & 4's to the panel and there it was Hashimotos. I was told I had Lupus, fibromyalgia, cronic fatigue, RA, MS and the list goes on & on. You can deff have fibromyalgia like symptoms with thyroid problems, I found accupuncture to be the most effective for pain management. I hope you can find relief from your pain. | Yes It has been tested. Once it was considered borderline but subsequent tests all say normal.
