Had the best fish sandwich of my life at Craig's Restaurant in Islamorada. The place is not much to look at, but oh my the fish sandwich is to die for! Definitely stop there on the drive down.

One more suggestion.... in the afternoon, take the Westin's water taxi over to Sunset Key for lunch. If you do not stay there you can not use the beach, but you can enjoy a fabulous lunch and relaxing boat ride over... it is a beautiful spot

I've been looking online at hotels / resorts on the beach.

Just wanted to mention three places we have stayed in the past.

Garden House - Small and more like a motel
Garden House~Key West Florida Bed and Breakfast with Tropical Gardens

Island City House - Very nice, rather expensive
Garden House~Key West Florida Bed and Breakfast with Tropical Gardens

My big time favorite - Simonton Court- Love this place but very expensive
Bed Breakfast Key West Hotel Resort Cottage and Inn Accommodation at Historic Simonton Court Guest House one block from Duval Street in Old Town Old Key West FL Florida

However, none of these are on the beach. Really the beach is not much in Key West. Ha.

I'm needing to plan my next vacation and I think I too, want to go to key west. I've driven there once from WPB, when I lived there but it was so long ago. After seeing this thread I really think that's my destination! I'm excited to ride the scooters. This thread has so much info - thank you!

No, we have never been to Fantasy Fest because we always go to the Keys in the spring. Is this the wild festival held on Halloween? If so, we have seen pictures in some of the windows. Love the Halloween body paintings on some of the young ladies. Ha. Have you been, by-the-way?

No, I have never been to Fantasy Fest, but I have seen all my parents photos of it. Amazing the paint job they do even on bare women tops and then everyone walks down main street having a great time parting. It is kinda like mardi gras.
My dad usually goes out in the boat everyday and often goes out with a captain friend of his to fish. The fish they catch sell to the local restaraunts. This way they have to fun of fishing and make back the money in gas by selling the fish. All their left overs go over their dock (they have their own dock in the backyard) to feed the fish, parrot fish, lobster, etc... They have a canal that goes up behind their house and it goes into the Gulf. It is really weird to swim in the canal - so deep you cannot see the bottom. I was always afraid of sharks, but the beginning of the canal is somewhat shallow and the sharks do not usually get into the canals.
When we went snorkeling once with them - my daughter stepped on a stingray. It blended in so much with the sand she did not know it was there. We have had some pretty good times down there.
Lobstering is not what it use to be. Many of the cages/traps get broken in to by other people at night.

Some more. The first one is Hemmingway's home. There are still cats there - decendents from his cats and they have 6 toes. Second photo is of a Key Deer. They are smaller than regular deer and very protected down there.

Key West...so beautiful and friendly! Are you taking the furbutt? It is so pet friendly, most restaurants allow pets until 6pm. Hope you have a great time and you must try the key lime on a stick, it's like heaven! frozen keylime pie coated with chocolate...salivating just thinking about it!!!

To the OP - I fionally got a hold of my dad and he and mom are going to send me a list of hotels they would recommend. I will PM you the list as soon as I get it.

December is good, but the end of Oct due to Fantasy Feast is so full - really a hard time to get a hotel then.

I'm glad to know that Key West is pet friendly!! We were thinking about letting Prince stay with his gma in Tampa, but it's good to know that we have options.
