I was born in 1958 so I was just a kid in the 60s. But I remember it as a scary time--at least I was very anxious. We lived in a university town, so there were lots of protests going on. The Viet Nam war raged on, and every night there was a body count on the news. When MLK and Robert Kennedy were both assassinated, I thought the world was coming to an end. Of course I was only 10, and I had no perspective.

It was scary, family and friends dying in a war that just would not end. Neighborhood friends going away to war and never coming back.
Wearing "POW" and "MIA" bracelets all the time.

However one of the highlights I remember was my mother and father taking me to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco to witness the hippie phenomena and to buy "love-beads"(do not know if anyone remembers those)!

From that point on, my fashion sense was completely changed! I recall my parents not being to happy about it either.

You must have been a good girl because I wanted to be protesting and driving a VW wagon! My father fought in Nam maybe thats why I was such a rebel. Also I was not in the states at that time.

Since I was in my teens and early twenties during the Nam War, I remember it well. But, what I remember the most is the mistreatment these vets received when they returned home. Beat-up mentally and physically from the war, they came home to those spitting in their faces, verbal and physical abuse. Why? only because they were American's (some drafted into the armed forces) that only did what their country mandated them to do.


I'm married to a Vietnam Vet. He was proud to have served his country and still is. I also had brothers that served during that war, cousins and uncles. I supose we were all scared that they wouldn't come home.

I remember all of us coming back to the states and witnessing the hatred some had toward the military. It was also the first time a kid called me a Spick. The country was full of Anger. My poor father will not to this day talk about what happened in Nam. I didn't mean I was protesting the war I stood behind my father. I was protesting because I wanted love beads and a VW Wagan with Power flowers.

I graduated just a month after Saigon fell so never went into the military. I did have 2 cousins (one who left a leg in Nam), a brother and a BIL who all served.

The anti-war protests will to this day start arguments. I'm on the fence about them. I can see the good intentions and the bad execution of the anti-war sentiments. I always think back to the old saying..."the road to hell is paved with good intentions".

Some of the best war quotes I've ever seen came from Gen. William T. Sherman, the Union general. Here's a few of them..

Yes, war is hell. But, I can't forgive the way our men were treated when they came back from Nam. Some were drafted to do their countries bidding and many came back after being tortured, beaten men. I lost two cousins because of the Nam War. They didn't die there, but maybe they should have. They never recovered mentally from their experiences.

You crazy woman......Love Beads and VW Wagon with Power Flowers. You know living in Southern California that wasn't seen too much down here. Northern California was the center of that movement.
