| Any Accountants/CPA's I am going into the accounting field. I have done one semester of my generals so far. I help my dad out with his books and everything. anyway. My school has a two year degree in accounting (aas deg.) i originally wanted to do the four years and become a cpa. but i would have to transfer and it would end up costing more money because i have to take 40 credits in generals vs. 21 credits in generals (something about transfer regualtions). then transfer and pay more money because it would be a university. I know the pay wouldn't be as high, but i could always just go back for another 2 yrs down the road. So is there really a difference in there job description? Any differences at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

| Hi, My husband is an accountant. He didn't go for the CPA until he got laid off and needed a new job. The difference is opportunities and MONEY. Some places won't hire you without the CPA and the pay is a lot better with the CPA. Long run CPA will support you better. Your idea of getting the 2yr and then going back is good. You can work and take night or internet classes. Good luck. |

| Thanks, I am just so frustrated with my school. I understand taking some generals, but taking 40 credits of gernrals just so i can transfer (and none of them apply to accounting-they are like philosohpy, biology, health!!!!) ?! When I could take 21. I am poor as it is. I have to meet this whole requirement thing and it would take more than 2 years to get all these genreals done, it seems like a total waste of time and money. --there are like 5 categories and i have to get nine credits from 4 then 1 from a phyed class--- it seems a little dumb, to take all of them classes, so i can transfer and hope that those classes fit into thier program.... ughh, stupid regualtions!!!!

| I know it seems dumb but sometimes those classes help you in other areas. I guess they want you to be "well rounded". Maybe some of the classes you could "test" out of. I did that at a community college. You still pay for the class, but you don't have to attend. Keep your goal in mind. You want the best education for the best future. When you are older, you will be glad you didn't give up. |

| Please don't let the cost of college put off plans to further your education. My family didn't have the money to pay for any of my college, and I realized that student loans were inevitable. Believe me- it is painful to write the check each month to pay off the loans, but it is so worth it! I'm not sure about your area, but career choices are extremely limited in my area if you don't have a bachelor's degree of some sort. If you are able to get a job, those in your field with a 4 year degree (or CPA in your case) will have a better chance for advancement opportunities than you. In my field, you almost need a masters in order to be considered for a position because the competition for jobs is quite fierce. The money you make in the future will more than pay off any school loans you need to take out. There are a lot of student loan consolidation companies with graduated payment plans. With this option, you pay less when you are just beginning your career, and as your salary (hopefully!) increases, so do your payments. Just do the four years now and get it over with. Down the road you will have more expenses and responsibilities that will make going back much more difficult. By the way...Feel free to PM me if you want to complain about the disgustingly high costs of college tuition or the pain-in-the-butt process of finding the money to actually attend and buy books! LOL! Believe me- you are not alone! |

| thanks guys. i didn't even think about paying for the books. I thought that this route would be cheaper-doing my generals at a community college then transfering! i think i will just graduate with a 2 year degree then enroll in the other college instead of transfering. that way i get around the loop hole of the minnesota transfer curriculum. of 40 freakin credits. I guess i am lucky that my parents are helping pay for college. so far i don't have any loans. I am going to pay them back tho. You guys are the best!!! thanks!!!!

| I'm doing the same thing you are right now! I'm just going to get my associates in accounting first & then go for the bachelor's. I haven't decided about the CPA yet either. Have you applied for pell grants, cause those can help out soooo much! I only have 10 classes left till I get my associates degree! Almost there! |

| I live in Canada and it is a bit different, however a CGA here is like a CPA in the US. I started to take accounting, but after completing my 2 yr diploma and starting on the degree & CGA I decided that it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Anyways, the diploma will get a good job, but to have the degree/CPA will get a much better job and the pay will be much higher. If you enjoy this field you should take it as far as you can, it will be a huge benefit if you do. Good luck!
