My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Anyone updated their Garmin GPS? HELP? Thought I'd ask here. We bought Garmins for our kids (grown) & they haven't updated the maps, but really need to. Today, my sil called & was trying to do the same thing. She bought the communicator plug-in & now trying to download. Does it really cost $100 for updates? Hope not! It states that the first update is free, I think, if you registered......which they didn't! There is also a Lifetime update available, but don't know the price? You have to plug in this communicator device first which I don't have yet. So if anyone has tackled this update process, any advice would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Can't help you - I drive the old fashioned way ......get lost - drive around aimlessly looking at the sun for support and direction - then finally stopping to ask directions and HOPE they speak english and tell me ONE street I may actually know. |

| My Son gave us his garmin and we did the update and it cost us 80.00 for the update. It was very easy to do and if you have problems you can call them and they are very helpful and will walk you through it! I know it stinks that it cost money to update but it is well worth the aggrevation of getting lost. lol

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | haha Girl.....know that feeling. Well, it's just as bad when the Garmin doesn't recognize new highways, etc.

| I recently went to update mine and found that yes, the update is 100(ish) but also the lifetime one it only 120(ish). Look for more info on the site. I couldn't afford either one right now; so I have not done it yet. Good luck

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Don't waste the money on the upgrades Hi...my DH & I drive semi truck across the US. 3 years ago I bought the cheapie Garmin c330 on black friday for maybe 75.00. We used it for about a month without too many issues. Keep in mind, semis have restricted routes etc so it's real important we have an idea where we're at. We always use our atlas to verify any routes chosen by the Garmin. Well, I'd heard that you get a free update so I contacted them. Turns out they wanted you to purchase the "updated maps". I was livid...I'd just bought it! So, I rant & rave in an email to them (see the nic! LOL) & they finally agree to send me the update. We installed it...guess what? NO DIFFERENCE! There ARE things you can add to your GPSs' though. They're called "points of interest" & contain things that interest you. For instance we found 1 that contained Cat Scales which we often need to weigh loads to insure they're not overweight. I like wineries...guess you know there's wineries listed as points of interest. You'll need the cable but ours came with it. OK, long enough, I think you will find it helpful!

Thank you so much for the info. We've had ours though for a couple of years. We really need the updated maps. We specifically have a new interstate that was added after the fact that we travel quite frequently. I just checked the prices @Best Buy & can buy a newer model for $99.99. Just doesn't make sense? Why pay that much for updated map? It seems if u r going to spend the money for updates, the lifetime updates would be more beneficial. Guess that's what they know.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Yes, technology actually changes so quickly that by the time a manufacturer has put it on the shelves it's out of date. DH keeps threatening to but the "truckers" gps but I'm so frugal I keep talking him out of it. If it's not broke, why fix it, right?!

| I bought a Garmin for my son and I for Christmas in 2008, also bought the lifetime updates. I think they are worth it if you travel any at all. My son is 19 so hasn't driven in large cities (he goes to college in Indianapolis) so this helps him if there are detours. Ours came with a cord that goes from the Garmin to the computer. We download the updates to the computer and then to the Garmin.

| We have a Garmin but have never updated it. I think it's silly updates are almost as much we gave for the GPS. We REALLY need to update ours. It has taken us on some hellacious routes. I have saw updates on Amazon, but not sure how they work..?.. The lifetime maps were about $90. |

| Our Garmin was $39.00 to update thru Garmin. Not as much as updating the navigation system in the Honda!
