I bought a Garmin for my son and I for Christmas in 2008, also bought the lifetime updates. I think they are worth it if you travel any at all. My son is 19 so hasn't driven in large cities (he goes to college in Indianapolis) so this helps him if there are detours. Ours came with a cord that goes from the Garmin to the computer. We download the updates to the computer and then to the Garmin.
