| Economy...Hitting Home I came across this thread and remember reading it the first time around last Fall. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...ing-about.html At the time my household hadn't really been effected by the economy, other than the increase in prices for everthing but we were handling it all well...funny how a few months can make a difference. Since the beginning of the year my position was eliminated on Jan 22nd and my husband has been ill and we don't know what is wrong. Due to his ongoing intermittent disability hours and his FMLA expiring on 3/9, we believe he was on the brink of losing his job as an I.T. consultant with the same company that eliminated my positon as District Administrator. Yesterday he was offered a secure job with the State agency where he's been a consultant for the past 5 years. Only catch, it has a pay cut of 1/3 of his current salary. The medical benefits and retirement plan are wonderful but having such a decrease in income from both of us will definitelly change our way of living. Since January, we have lost half of our usual yearly income amount, which means we need to scale back half our budget. Not certain how...the possibilty of eventually losing our vehicles and R.V. and falling behind on other payments, such as credit cards, etc, is very real. I know many are in the same boat or worse. Through all of this, we are trying to focus on the blessings of it all....my husband was offered a secure position at a time when many are losing theirs...like myself. We're trying to remember that as long as we have our home and our family in it we should consider ourselves lucky and truly blessed. Any income is better than none at all, which is a sad reality for many. As for the future, we're tightening the boot straps...any cost-cutting ideas are welcomed! Thanks for listening. Just feeling like things are crazy right now and feeling a little overwhelmed!! God Bless!!

| I'm sorry you and your family are going thru this. Even though we both have a job, we have been cutting on our splurges and other things to save more money and to be grateful that we have a job too. I've been drying my clothes outside hanging them in the back yard ( we have a fenced backyard) I also been cutting on buying starbucks, instead we make coffee at home and we both take it to work we've also been buying generic brand groceries and other products too. I hope some of these ideas help you.

| I know how you feel! I am a university student, so I am already broke as a joke! There are limited summer jobs this summer due to the economy, so it's going to be tough! We have started to buy no name groceries and other products as well, I find that most of the time they are pretty close to the "good" brand, and a lot cheaper! Just today I went shopping at a consignment shop and spent only $36.00 Canadian and got: brand new shoes, a spring jacket, two blazers, a vest, and a bracelet! Shop on sale and clearance racks, thrift stores and consignment shops! I would have never even thought about doing this before, but I saved so much money, and you can find some really cute things! If things go wrong with your car or house, try to fix them yourself. We just changed the spark plugs and wires on an older vehicle we have easily. (I'm only 20) Google searches can help you with instructions on most things! Important for our earth and pocketbook is conserving gas! If you need to go somewhere, try to figure out what else you will need to do later on and get it done while you are already out. ex. If you need to pick up someone, try to go early and get groceries, run other errands while you are out, etc. Make a list of what you need to spend for the month, what payments you must make, grocery and gas costs, bills, etc. Tally it up and see if you have anything left over. If you do have money left, try not to spend it. Save it until it is needed We are all feeling the harsh economy right now, hoping it picks up soon! By the way, it is wonderful that your husband was able to get another stable job! Far too many people in my area are losing their jobs right now! |

| You are not alone! My position is being eliminated as of 5/22. I'm single, so I don't have another income to rely on, so it's pretty scary and the jobs aren't there. It's hard for you to take a cut in salary, but if it's a secure position with great benefits, that means alot in this world right now! Hang in there, that's what I'm trying to do!

| ! You surely are not alone. We have our own businesses and it's been SO slow We are really in danger of losing both of our vehicles if we don't pay in the next couple of weeks, we are behind two payments We have a few big jobs lined up and are awaiting permits (THANKS, government assh@les ) before we can get started on them and get some cash flowing. I clean houses and have lost half my clients because they couldn't afford me anymore. One of the first things to get cut is little luxuries like having your home cleaned by someone else, unfortunately. We'll ALL get through this, though, and be better people for it Hang in there

| If I lost half my income I'd lose my house. My house payments are just about 1/2 my income by themselves. Sad huh? Right now my company has made everyone take 1 week off unpaid in Q2, and more than likely we have to do it again in Q3. That hurts alot. It reduces my paychecks by about $120 every 2 weeks. I, too, was not affected by the economy too much at all up until the last month when I found this out. Now I'll know whats its like to live on such a tight budget! YUCK! I thank my lucky stars every single day that I have a job to get up and go to!
