| Anyone own a Shih Tzu? Does anyone own a Shih Tzu? My mom is getting a baby Shih Tzu in a couple of weeks and I'd like to learn a little bit about them from your personal experiences. I know i could read up on the internet all day on the general temperament etc, but out of experience.. what should i be expecting? are they anything like Yorkies? like temperament wise etc. thanks in advance my YT fam! |

| We used to have a shih tzu many years ago. He really had quite the little personality. He was very friendly and outgoing. They are great little companion pets and while I think the yorkie seems more human the shih tzu's aren't as needy emotionally.

We have a 14 year old Shih Tzu. She has been a very good dog. She dosen't think she is a dog. This may just be her. I really don't remember her playing a whole lot even as a baby. This may be though because, I got her from my sister who at the time had 2 Shih Tzu that had puppies just within a copule of weeks of each other. The grandmother to ours was so jealous that she killed all of the pups from the other litter except for ours. At the time my mom & dad were at my sister staying for a little while in a small house they had outback so, my mom took precious and her mom and kept them and needless to say she was spoiled rotten and to this day whenever my mom is around that who precious would rather be with. Dogs remember a lot more than people give them credit for. Anyway I sure your mom's will be a great dog. The only suggestion that I have is and this may not be all Shih Tzu's, I wouldn't train them to go on pads or papers I would try to train them to go specifically outside. Precious has never totally housebroken. My sister trained all of hers to papers and I have never done that since and I've had 2 yorkies that I housetrained since then and soon to be a third. This is just my opinion & preference. Just a suggestion.

| We have friends that have two and they are really sweet. I think they are really pretty too and love all the colors they come in. My favorite is the black and white ones. |

Your Shih Tzu is quite a bit bigger than mine. She won't go over 9 lbs.

they are more mellow than a yorkie but lots more coat and grooming ( you will have to get an all systems brush with the long wire bristles) and start her early having her lie on her back to do alot of the grooming. Of course you can always give the pup a puppy cut but even after 6 mos and a puppy cut that hair will mat if you don't stay at it. Someone at YT started a thread once that said "Why is the Yorkie the hardest dog to house train??" At that moment I thought, oh no it's a Shih Tzu. Don't let that discourage you because if you start out by only using pee pads or only outside, the pup will come along fine. Don't try both, they just can't seem to handle it. When they wanted our attention they would sneeze.....It will always be my second most favorite breed with the Japanese Chin 3rd. Also they are not as yappy as the Yorkie. All of the breeds have points we love and some not so great!! Enjoy.

But all in all they are great dogs. Just like with any animal or people they have good & bad issues. Buit I love her and I know it's just a matter of time before she is gone.

| Thank you for all your input everyone. I am more than excited to be getting a new baby.. (well it's not really mine! but i'll be taking care of her as well).. I know for sure that my mom is going to be getting a girl, and she is black and white. as for my friend with the shih tzu's that i posted a long time ago that bella bear brought up. She took the babies to the vet and everything. I convinced her if she really wanted to be a good responsible breeder this is what you had to do blah blah.. i gave her all those websites that people had suggested.. and the babies are all healthy.. i guess i just had to point her in the right direction and i had YT to thank for it! thank you very much everyone. |
