| I have seen some of your posts and they are confrontational. You probably would get a different reaction if they werent so harsh. jmo

| Seriously, if volunteering at a kill shelter is gonna get you that worked up, you should find another place to volunteer. Maybe a rescue where they don't put dogs to sleep? I understand being passionate, but I think you are going about being passionate in the wrong way. Find a way to make a change and better whatever it is. Coming on a public forum and screaming to everyone about it, is not making a change. No one listens to that. Sorry, but it just irritates people and you won't get your point across. Not all dogs that find themselves in rescues are "designer dogs", puppy millers, or from bybs. I volunteer too and a lot of dogs I've noticed are PUREBRED hounds like beagles or powerful breeds like pitt bulls because the buyers DO NOT RESEARCH. Not all responsibility lies on the breeders... a lot also lies on the person that owns the dog too. Just because I own two puppy mill dogs doesn't mean they are going to end up in a shelter. I owned a powerful byb'er dog breed and she lived for 6 years, was as mean as could be from bad breeding, but she still stayed with us. You see, a lot falls back on the owners too. Also, my shar-pei was an outside dog. She loved being outside. She loved running and being free. If she had been inside let loose she would have literally killed our cat. We did bring her inside in extreme weather and at night though and she slept in our mudroom.

| Thor's Human Donating Member | I agree with chachi. You are obviously knowledgable and bring up important points. However, from the posts I've seen, you seem very angry and accusatory. I don't think the point is "oh, we shouldn't judge" as much as it is "rather than judge, let's EDUCATE." It seems to me that you expect everyone else to have the knowledge you do about dogs, and the fact is, many people don't. Maybe you think they should, but how are they going to learn if someone doesn't educate them? Passionate animal lovers have a responsibility to TEACH, not to berate or shame. |

I'm not going to comment on the content of the original post. I'm just going to say that anytime we start generalizing about an entire group of people (be it a race, culture, country, a group of breeders, a religion, PETA members ) - we have already lost the battle we're trying to fight.

Hate the sin, not the sinner. You need to chill with the anger because you are only hurting yourself.

It is freezing here and snowy, and I am NOT bringing them inside! ![]() We had an outside dog (lab) for a long time and he was perfectly happy. He was miserable when we brought him in the house. The only reason we rehomed him was because he got to be lonely in the winter months and it was just eating at me, and we could not get another dog, as we met (eh hem, exceeded ) our limit. He was the best though, and if we could have had another dog out there with him, it would have been more ideal. If someone has an outside dog and provides them with adequate shelter, attention and nourishment, thats great. Some breeds were bred to be outside a lot.

| Keely Momma, It might help to think of this public forum as a public room. Realize there are people and faces and hearts and feelings on the other side of the screen you are looking at. You are open to your opinion, but you said that at times you feel like slapping some of the people at your shelter in the face. When you reply to a thread with a negative response, you ARE slapping the person in the face. Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean you aren't having the same effect. You do know how it feels, because people HAVE done the same to you. There is an old saying "You can catch more flies with Honey than Vinegar!" There is great truth in that. You have great passion, and if channeled correctly, you will use this to your advantage, and the advantage of the pet world. |

Having passion is GOOD but you should find more effective ways to direct it. In some of your previous posts where you have tried educating people you have sounded confrontational... that might not have been what was intended, but you could have phrased things differently. People are more apt to listen to someone who is calm and will explain things, rather than being accusatory. For example, instead of saying, "Keeping a dog outside is CRUEL AND SICK" you could say, "There are a lot of dangers of keeping a dog outside all the time and these are the effects of these dangers ...." Which one would you be more likely to listen to? The first response would put the other person on the defense whereas the second response, a person would more than likely say either "yes, but ..." then give you a response or say "oh you know I never thought of that. Thanks!" They could still get defensive, but you know, you can't help everyone!

Mine aren't coming in either, they shed, but, they have eachother, and believe me, they have it made. Hubby worries about them when it gets cold out, but, I keep telling him, they're both long haired dogs(even the shepherd is long haired) and they're not tied up, and they have lots of straw and eachother. heck, the dog across the street is tied up, by itself, and is a cocker spaniel, and believe me, my dogs have it a lot better, I feel like stealing that dog and bringing it over to our shelter, at least it would be warm. We even have the thermometer in our dogs shelter that shows us inside what it is in their shelter, and it has a roof and insulation in there too. I can even walk in to it, which I do everynight to feed them. | |
