Just got home late . Havent been out with my family in a while. Got home and refreshed the page immediately. I am SOOOOO thrilled to see that you got good results with the syringe/nipple. I figured even if she's not sucking. The nipple is far enough in her throat that you can very gently squeeze the syringe. I know it takes forever but trust me she will be a pro in no time. I was actually brushing my teeth when I refreshed the thread . Istarted jumping up and down and my husband couldnt understand what I was saying! I kept saying " Yesh! Yesh ! " rinsed my mouth and started telling him Yes ! Yes! She used the nipple syringe!. I googled this about how much to feed and I bumped into a site of handraising chihuahuas and the breeder uses a syringe with this nipple tip . I didnt think this nipple would work but as soon as I attached it ...I thought "OMG Dena has to see this!" I didnt want to explain it , I wanted you to see it! I just found this thread tonight and have read each and every word...first off I have to tell you Dena that you are absolutely awesome for doing this for Emma, your heart is pure gold...and I admire your courage and strength. Emma is trying so hard ...what a beautiful, precious gift you have there. I cried...literally sobbed watching the video, I hope and pray she continues to thrive and that she lives a happily ever after life. She, and you deserve it... |

Just checking in to see how things are going. Do you thing the stiches keep coming out because they can't get them in very well due to her size? If she heals without the stiches have they said if they could do corrective surgery when she is a little bigger? I am sure she is rubbing her face because the stiches are bothering her. She is just so sweet. I will keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers. |
1 Attachment(s) I don't know if it's that they can't get them in well enough... or the rubbing... or the suckling.... I just don't know.... it's just a really tough spot to try to keep still. It pulls so much in that area even when she opens her mouth to yawn... or cry... or anything. :( It's just so frustrating!! I wish I knew what to do for her.............. :( The surgeon can't get in till 1:00 - - so I guess we'll see what he suggests. I'm so worried about infection.................. |

Yeeeaaaa for the weight gain, and that syringe is just ingenious! Poor baby with those darn stitches! I logged on to see emma with my daughter even before my 1st cup of coffee:coffee2:. She was the last thing we saw before bed and the 1st thing when we woke up. You are doing a great job! Sending more prayers to Oklahoma!:hands: |

Ohhhh Poor little girl! Are they using disolvable stitches?....Maybe they need to use regular because when she eats she is getting them wet and they are disolving......Just an idea:confused: |
That breaks my heart to see her face like that. Poor baby...I'm praying they figure out something that will be better for Emma. She's been through so much already. Dena you must be devastated to see her like that again. Praying for strength for you too. God bless you both |
She is so cute,even with her little face with her stitches coming out,i have been watching her blog and she has a lot of energy for a little one. |
That poor little one. There must be something to hold those stiches inplace while her mouth heals. I hope something works for her Dena so you can stop worrying and just enjoy this baby and get her to a good weight. Hang in there. Finger's crossed for the two of you. |
Oh Dena....I know you must just be a mess having to see her like that. :cry: This just breaks my heart. She still looks like such a little angel though, and I am hoping and praying that there will be more than the doctors can do for her. I will keep checking back for updates sweetie :hands: |
It's just so frustrating.... Tracy (Beabble) and I talked in length about WHAT WOULD WORK.......... and we just couldn't come to any real options. They can't possibly keep stitching... they are ripping right through her skin... then it splits... the stitches are in tact, but the face is torn.... I'm not even sure she has anything left to attempt to stitch to! I actually went out at 3am and bought super glue to try to close up the wound.... but got home and was too afraid to try it. I would think that would be an option for the vet though.... "surgical" super glue (same thing) and I bet it would hold better.... the only reason I didn't do it, is because I'm unsure of the possible toxic reaction being in the area where the wound is. The fumes alone are enough to burn MY eyes, let alone her little nasal airway. Maybe the surgical stuff is more of an option... So I'm waiting to see the vet.... She's up to 95 grams today.... let's hope she at least continues to gain... I wouldn't be surprised if she were fighting an infection soon.... :( |
Oh gosh that poor little girl! I know it has got to be so incredibly frustrating to just not be able to help her right away. I am so happy that she is gaining weight though, that is wonderful. And I totally agree with you about the super glue thing - it may definitely work, but WOW is that stuff super strong and having to put it right by her tiny little nose....gosh, I can't even imagine :cry: I hope like heck that Emma doesn't get an infection...I am saying tons of prayers for her Dena :hands: |
it sucks that her stitches keep popping. it has nothing to do with the fact that they are dissolvable, though. they are usually used in oral surgery, just like for people. if only you could keep her from rubbing her face. i'm sure that's causing a big problem. what about a bathroom sized paper cup? if you cut out the bottom would that fit around her head and be long enough for her not to rub? |

Those stiches are starting to be a real problem! I hope the vets could come up with a better solution. More prayers of strength coming your way from LA! |
Ouch poor baby! I read this thread this morning for updates and it breaks my heart to know that she is struggling so much with this. I see what you mean about the not being enough skin to keep stitching up :( I hope they come up with a solution soon. I know her palate is intact which is great. Maybe they might have to let the lip heal like this until she is bigger and has more growth around her lip area that they can attempt it again. I don't see how they would keep restitching :( I know the vets know when to stop and when they feel that they can proceed. I'm still very happy to know that she is continue to gain slowly. I wouldnt try the NewSkin glue either. Here's what I found on that skin glue: The adhesive is similar to crazy glue and some other skin adhesives used in Canada and Europe, but, according to Quinn, it is stronger, more flexible and less toxic. It works by simply squeezing the wound together and applying the glue on top, essentially forming a bridge. It can be used practically anywhere on the body except the hands, feet and around mucous membranes such as the lips. As soon as I read that Emma's stitches tore loose again, my first thought was the glue that is used for wounds. That poor little one is trying so hard and it's a shame nothing is working. The vet did such a tremendous job fixing her little face. Maybe tying gauze or something all the way around her head to help keep her wound from opening. Hold it in place with a rubber band or something. I can picture it in my mind, but I can't really describe what I see as a possible help. I'll keep praying for a solution. Hugs. |

Any chance of possible keeping her sedated a few days to give it some time to heal? |
I thought of those little butterfly bandaids . They are tiny and hold a cut closed together. I'm sure even those will have to be cut to fit her tiny lip and will have to put changed a few times a day maybe.I know I'm probably being a PITB =pain in the butt :) just thinking of anything that may work.It must be extremely frustrating for you . You are doing the absolute best anyone could ever do for Emma.There was no one else that could have helped Emma better than you have been doing.
