Unfortunately this is what happens when you live in a neighborhood with an HOA. It's a win/lose situation, they take care of a lot or problems and are instrumental in keeping property values from diminishing, but at the same time, they can be a PITA with rules sometimes.

I can understand if there is an ongoing problem w/ dogs 'going' in other people's yard that they would put guidelines like these into effect...until they do and actually enforce them, the problem will likely continue. YOU may be doing your part to clean up any messes, but apparently there are other dog walkers that aren't. As far as the peeing part, I'm on the fence about that...highly acidic urine can kill grass and cause brown spots. Being married to someone who's pride and joy is his weed free, super green lawn, I can understand why some people would be upset if their yard were being damaged by someone else's dog....true it's 'just a yard', but the point is, it's their yard. I personally could care less if a dog pees on my yard...but then again, there haven't been any brown spots popping up around the mailbox either.

Good luck! My brother lives in a condo, in his community i think they also have these rules. You are not supposed to let your dogs walk on other people's lawns, and there is a specific area where you can walk your dogs, but there are deer and animals out there that carry lyme disease so i never walk mine in that area. There are also loose cats that belong to ppl there, so i really dont follow their rules. I just clean up after mine if they happen to go where they shouldn't, no one seems to care anyway. There are a lot of dogs there

It is fairly expensive to repair lawn burns, and I understand why people wouldn't like the look. Establishing a fine system seems to be the "fairest" way to pay for this. Other ways to pay would be to raise everyone's dues, or raise only dog owners' dues, neither alternative very fail in my opinion. Fining only those dogs that are causing the problem is very just, and I'm sure they are hoping the offending dog owners will just curb their dogs. However, it does seem that male dog owners will get bum wrap, because of all the leg lifting with no peeing, so I suggest you use a "bum wrap" or belly band when walking in certain areas.

I don't blame you for being upset! I would be angry too, especially since the board had been asked to table the motion for further discussion. You know, neighborhood associations have their good points, but, having lived in several, they also have people who just don't have enough to do and they fulfill their lives by thinking up "new" rules for everyone else to live by! We used to have a lady that rode around on her bike with a clipboard making notes as to who's flower gardens needed weeding. I called her "The Wicked Witch of the West"!!

To you people who think that this is unfair, doesn't the dead grass bother you, and if it does, what do you think should be done about it and who should pay for this? It's easy to complain, but what's a better alternative?

Bless your heart, I know that would be hard. Guess you could always walk them on a tread mill. lol!! This morning I opened my front door to see this puppy (big) tee teeing on our hedge. Then, across the street here comes a German Shepard followed by 2 baby chi's. I could not believe. They were headed for a busy highway. People letting their pets run loose and not caring about them would upset me more than tee tee on my yard.

The condo I live in recently sent a letter around to everyone saying that if we were caught not cleaning up after our dogs, then we'd be fined $50... although there was never a board meeting to vote on this issue, so if they try to fine anyone, they can legally be taken to court.

But, since your board did vote on the issue, they can fine you per offense. Although, I don't think they can legally take your dogs away from you on your forth offence... That's like taking someone's child away because it played in someone elses lawn. Although, they could possibly have you and your dogs evicted for not following the rules.

IMO, it would probably just be best to let them do their business on your lawn and then go outside of your community for longer walks. You don't want to get into trouble because of annoying condo comandos that have nothing better to do than point out what people are doing wrong.

One question though --does anyone on your board even have a dog?? If not, that's a very biased vote and you could probably file a claim with the main condo association headquarters in your state.

I don't think they're anti-pet...I think they are anti-people who don't respect other's property. Personally it ticks me off to see pet owners allow their pets to use MY lawn as their bathroom. I don't allow my dogs to go on someone else's property.

It the board never voted on it, then who sent the letter? ONE of the board members acting on behalf of all of the others?

Yes indeed! That is one of my biggest pet peeves. (No pun intended. :P )

My condos have a management company who runs the office. He is the one who sent the letter. I'm waiting to bring this up in the next HOA meeting.

I recommend calling the main HOA for your state and bringing your questions and concerns to them. They are your best source for information. Also, you can file a formal complaint about your HOA with them and they do investigate it.

Both my mother and grand mother were HOA presidents and vice presidents for their HOA's. Let me know if you need something more specific and I can ask them.

OK, well that makes sense. If the mgm't sent the company on behalf of the board's request, that's one thing. Just on their own is another...unless they were given ultimate power by the board to begin with...

Where we live, six feet of frontage belongs to the town. So dogs can go on the first six feet of someone's property. Once in a while we have potties near our mailbox, but I don't mind. I just send hubby out to clean it up.

That stinks, sorry that is happening to you .

I try not to let my babies on other's lawns out of respect for them, but sometimes they will hop up to pee on their yard right next to the curb which technically I believe is public property (near the electrical poles). I try very hard to not let them past that point though just to avoid issues.
