Here is what I have learned about pits....they think they are the size of a yorkie!!!!! It is soo funny to watch them play...they want to crawl in your lap like a lap dog and they think they are tiny creatures that can fit thru anything!! Lol. They are very funny. They are very sweet dogs (if raised and trained properly and have a loving background). The only downside I have seen is....this goes back to the cancer thing...EVERY pit I have ever owned and EVERY pit my uncle has owned once they get older we have to have them put to sleep b/c they get VERY sick and vets never know whats wrong until after we make the sad decision to have him put to sleep so he wont suffer anymore and they do an autopsy and find they were eat up with cancer. I dont get it. I havent ever really heard of anyone else saying they have had the same problem but the pits that have been in my life (whether mine or my uncle's) have all gotten cancer. Very sad. That is the only reason I may not ever get another one...just b/c it kills me to see them get sick like that at old age and have to have them put to sleep.
A friend who just recently had to put her standard poodle down...learned cancer is a very prevalent disease in older large breed dogs.

Really!? That is soo sad. I just feel awful for them when they are sick. It kinda makes me aggravated that they can be eat up with cancer and the vet never know it until an autopsy. I just dont understand. Im sorry to hear about your friends poodle...I know how she feels.
On a lighter note...gives me another reason to get more yorkies since they arent large breeds!
So....who wants to team up with me and find a cure for cancer!???

They bred and showed dobermans when I was young, and before I was born And we had a farm as well. Our dogs were never mistreated.
My good friend from high school has a pit bull that is wonderful with her family. Unfortunately one of her good friends had to have 100 staples put in her head because she playfully pushed my friend goofing around in the livingroom of my friends house. The dog then attacked her.
Last story. Last year my mother in law walked up from the creek in her backyard with 2 of her grandkids, only to be met by the neighbors 2 pits on her front porch. She told the kids to go to the back slider and go in, but when they did, the dogs chased them. My mother in law ran after the dogs, and ended up almost having her calf ripped off. I have no idea how those dogs were raised to attest to the treatment of them prior.
These are just stories of personal experiences and doesnt even touch on all of the local headlines of pit bull attacks.
My firm belief is that this breed of dog should not be bred any longer. I dont believe they should all be euthanized, but I do not believe it is fair to the dogs or to people to have them. I think their is too much wrong with them mentally. They can be good for very very responsible owners, but there are far more owners not qualified to own them that do. Accidents can happen with any breed, obviously, but if you really get down to the facts, this is a very dangerous breed. Its like russian roulette having a pit bull IMO.
I agree!!

two words..... BIG BABIES!

I love pits. They are great dogs. Big mush pies. we have a blue pit in hosp right now and he is the sweetest dog. funny thing is, in the two cages surrounding his there is a vicious lab and a vicious golden... i have never been bitten or attacked by a pit, i have however been bitten by a black lab at work.

Pits are very gentle and loving. they want to sleep in your lap and get loved on all day long. i would get a pit in a heartbeat if i had the room for one.

LOL cheater

I went looking for the quiz after i saw you mention it. May help people realize that many dogs look like pits but are not so you shouldn't judge every square headed, boxy built dog and deem it dangerous.

My parents have a red nosed pitbull and he is the best dog ever!! I really wanted a pitbull actually, but my boyfriend wanted a small dog, so we got Jacoby instead!

I still plan on adopting a pitbull in the future. You just have to make sure you assert yourself as the pack leader so they know who is in charge, and give them the proper exercise! I think those pitbulls who end up biting their owners are not cared for properly and they do not trust and respect their owners.
Or as ceasar millan would say "excercise, disipline (sp?), affection in that order"

Don't yell at me, but pits are my FAV breed ever!!!! I fell into yorkies b/c I was forced to rehome my 2 loves Angel & Chubby when I moved b/c NO ONE would rent to me w/2 pit bulls, and I tried EVERYTHING......they are the best breed, very loyal, smart, and playful, big puppies for their whole life. They are so much fun, and trusting....always wanting to please you. I miss my babies but I know they have a great new home and a TON of room to run in, hardest thing I ever had to do...... but.....at least I met all you great people now, and I have my lil yorkie boy Maxx and hopefully NO ONE will ever be able to take him away from me!!!

My dtr's 2 pit bull mixes are living with us right now. Pru, the female, is a rescue that was thrown out of a car during a police chase (drug bust) when she was 6 months old. She lets Remi climb all over her, chew on her ears and lick the heck out of her face. Max just ignores my dogs. They really are misunderstood. Any dog can be vicious if raised that way.

Potential killer. Two words, I know. I can't imagine why anyone would want a pit bull. Too many of them are great pets until the day they kill something, human or animal. Maybe you could get a golden retriever to learn about them?

I agree with you...to a point.
ANY dog can turn on you in an instant, regardless of breed, breeding or how it was raised and trained. Opting for a breed that is historically less agressive by nature is not the solution--even other breeds can turn and it only takes ONE TIME! It is CRUCIAL to consider is the severity of damage each dog can inflict.
Unfortunately Pits have more working against them than any other breed. The physical structure and strength of the dog itself means that a resulting injury of an attack/bite would be far more severe than other breeds. In addition, because so many of them are used for dishonorable purposes, you have alot of bad breeding out there. When a Pit is poorly bred, the faults in temperament that can be picked up are deadly.

i think that is ridiculous. almost every animal can be a potential killer. Everyone is scared of them because of what they see or what they hear, but most don't even have personal experiences with them, or if they do, its only with one that is aggressive. So you label the entire breed as dangerous? I've been bitten by a lab, should i classify the entire breed as dangerous? I deal with many different breeds every day. Out of all the dogs that come in i'm more likely to put a muzzle on a german shepard, husky, akita, or rottie, then a pit bull.
