What a night...poor Rusty! (graphic)

I forgot....he would NOT get out of the truck when they got him....he would growl and not budge...so we left him there...TWO HOURS later, we finally got his stubborn behind in the house....I do not know why....it was like it was almost going back to the way he was when he first started coming over to our house. DH thinks it was the meds and pain...he has been fine the rest of the night though!

AND....the vet said she had seen this type of wound many times before...it was caused by the front bumper of a larger truck...probably that darn FedEX truck that was hauling a$$ down our road. Which is funny...(not really), but we LOATH FedEx....because they normally never come out this far...say they do and don't...we fight for weeks to get packages...aurgh.........and the one day they do come out this way...Rusty is on the road.

The vet said that even if he normally didn't chase cars or get on the road much before (which we live on a dead end country gravel road)...after this, chances are he will NOT get out there again!

I think that is everything.....I can't really think right now...it has been a long, eventful evening!

Poor Rusty! That is scary! I hope he heals soon and with no complications. Hugs!

DH is NOT happy w/ the vet...said that she was an idiot...didn't even tell him about the meds or anything...he had to ask about everything! Then, she didn't give him his rabies shot.....anyway....it was a $300 vet bill and apparently she did surgery because that portion of the bill was $200....he is bandaged up and we have to go back in on Wednesday to take some sort of drainage tube (?) out...I have no clue...I wish I would have been the one to pick him up. she probably debrided the wound and cleaned it up which was the "surgery" part. Then she placed a drain in the surrounding area so fluid wouldn't build up under the skin and cause a saroma. Keep the drain area clean by using a wash cloth and warm water. It will drip occasionally but it shouldn't be excessive. Don't let rusty pick at it and pull it out. If need be, put an e-collar on him. If you give me the names of the meds she gave you i can tell you more about then and their general use.

Aw, I just found this thread. Poor Rusty! I'm so sorry he got hurt. Your vet doesn't sound very helpful. Was she stressed or what!? Jeepers.

I sure hope Rusty heals quickly with no ill after effects.

Rusty has a red mesh bandage over the blue cast like bandage that has other bandages and tape on it. You will have too see in the pictures. Anyway, the drain is covered by the bandages and on Sunday, we take off the red bandage...but leave on all the others. And on Wednesday, we go back and they take all the bandages off and take the drain out...and probably rebandage.

I don't have the meds in the office...but we have used the pain ones before...maybe deramex or something like that? And the antiboitics...it starts w/ a "C" (I believe) and we have probably used it before....he has the be on the antiboitics for 14 days (twice a day). Pain pills as needed....but only half a pill at a time starting tomorrow.

I think she was busy or something...I've never EVER had a problem w/ her or the staff. But she had two emergency surgeries today and I am sure DH was getting upset w/ her for not calling him back all day. AND I bet when he went to pick up Rusty, the vet wasn't even though (I don't know though)...but normally if it is after a certain time, it is just the over hour person there. --and that lady doesn't know CRAP (sorry)....I don't know though...I will find out when I (I....I...I) take Rusty on Wednesday.

Its probably Clavamox and either Deramaxx or Rimadyl. The Clavamox is a wide spectrum antibiotic. Do you know if your vet did a culture on the wound? The anti-inflammatory will help cut down on the pain factor. however i see that he is a lab, and you know they don't feel pain LOL

i can picture what the bandage looks like but i'm unsure of the red mesh. will have to see it in a picture

Cephalexin 500mg twice daily 14 days
Deramaxx 75mg start 1/2 pill tomorrow (from 1 full pill today)

The red mesh is like a mesh shirt....I think it is just to help hold the bandages and keep the dog from messing w/ them....course, Rusty hasn't messed w/ them yet. On Sunday, that is to be cut off...they said two days....anyway, I don't know much...since I wasn't there

oh i see about the mesh now. The Cepha pills are used alot for skin infections so she's probably trying to ward them off or get rid of anything he may have picked up.

he's a brave boy. i'm sure he'll be back to normal very soon.

That cut looks painful! I'm glad he's home though and doing o.k. Hope he has a speedy recovery!
