Default One ear of my Yorking tips down

Hi guys,
I just got my yorkie last night. The breeder has been telling me that she has an ear tipping down. She has been putting those breathable tapes to keep it up. Last night she removed them cuz I was picking her up. Her ear wasn't that bad. Well today the ear get down more as the hours go by. Do you think if I keep putting this tape it will help? She is 13 weeks old. She was born 4/29/04..

Can you please give me tip of what I can do to bring her ear up?

Personally,I think its silly to tape a yorkies ears.I have a 3 month old yorkie who´s ear is also tipping down and I cant see a problem with it.Her ears were totally flat against her head when I got her at 8 weeks, but now one is up..somedays both.If theyre going to stand, they´ll do so on their own.I dont beleive in taping at all.I have 2 yorkies now,my first yorkie has perfect ears and I did nothing to help them stand, they did so on their own.Iv never seen a yorkie with floppy ears..so I guess that means something
Floppy ears arent a problem, but thats just my opinion

Yes, if you want the ears to stay up, apply the tape. We did that to Yoda when he was young for maybe a month or two because he had the same problem. Also be sure to shave off all excess hairs on his ears. But since then, his ears have stayed up just fine. I believe they can hear better if their ears are up and that is standard Yorkie pedigree to have ears sticking up. However, if you don't like that for your Yorkie, than floppy ears is fine.

I was also told that the upper 1/3 of the "leather" should be kept trimmed to avoid the long heavy hair pulling the ears down. According to the information that I found at the link below, the ears are firmly "set" by 6 months of age. I have also read other information about taping them up. We never had a problem with Toto's so I can't speak from any experience. I can tell you that she wouldn't put up with tape on her ears for two seconds! Toto was 16 weeks when we got her and they were standing up [I can't swear to it but I believe the breeder told us that they had just come up]. If they aren't going to stand [and perhaps it's too early to worry?] I would just love her, floppy ear and all!! I had an AKC collie when I was a child and one of his ears was late to stand ... I have pictures of him and it was sooo cute ... it later perked up just like the other! Good luck!

Hi Chelsie,
thanks for your reply, actually, I will love her the same (ear up or down), but I think I should try my best to help in trying to get her ear up... That is the standard Yorkie. She looks cute anyway, but if she has them both up her looks seems more inquisitive. Ah, I have seen Yorkies with the ears down, but not too many....

fateddie,
also thanks for replaying. One question tho, you said YODA was a month or two when you were putting the tape.. my breeder has been taping her ear and she is already 13 weeks. Have you heard of a 13 week old puppy that taping has still helped? The other ear is up all the time. I also read if the cartilage is too thick no matter how hard I try her ear will never get up totally. With YODA was only an ear or both? I am massaging her as well to improve circulation.

Again, thanks both
-R

btw, your doggies are soooooooo cute

Thanks bettyeanne:

Yes perhaps is too early to tell.. I am looking into the link you just sent me.
The good news is "Cosita" lets you put the tape, she does not look to happy but lets you.

thanks again,

You are welcome!! There is lots of good information on the internet. I just go to Google Advanced Search and type in Yorkshire Terrier and it will show you 1000's of sites with information ... then at the bottom of the page you will see "Search within results" ... click on that and type in anything you wish to know and it will direct you to just those sites with info on that subject!
Your baby's name is "Cosita"? What does that mean ... where are you located? We are in Alabama. Glad you found YorkieTalk!!

Higgin's ears have always stood right up. He has ENORMOUS ears.....looks like a rabbit! My son's little long haired Chihuahua has really BIG ears, too, and it is funny to see Higgins and Princess side by side. If a big wind came up, I think they could both flap their ears and fly! Those two just LOVE each other and Princess came to visit this weekend, so Higgins had a great time. We get to "babysit" for Princess when my son goes on his honeymoon cruise in September. Princess is an apartment dog and just loves playing in our yard/woods/lake. They live about 70 minutes away and Princess "knew" she was coming to see Higgins this time....she knows his name.....and whined with excitement on the ride up, then went WILD when they turned into our dirt road and she knew she was close.....It is so much fun to see them greet each other and play and play and play......

Hi bettyeanne: her ear is just tipping down hope it really comes up . I wonder if anything i do will work, we'll see. I will see if there is some Calcium supply.. i don't know. I'll do the search like you said.

Oh thanks for asking: "Cosita" means "little thing" in Spanish. I live in California but I am fluent in Spanish. My husband had a hard time trying to pronounce her name at first, but he learned to like it. He didn't even like Yorkies at all, but now he seems to loooooooove "Cosita" .. isn't it funny? He is all into teaching her and gets mad at me when I don't hold her strong enough cuz she has jumped already from my arms and hit herself once on her forehead.. thank God nothing happened, but he is now paranoid. LOL

I also liked YODA ... cute name fasteddie! What is yours puppy name? My friend has a Pomeranian and she named him "Fabio" .. gosh he really lives up to that name !! LOL perfect for him!

I will try to post pictures of my Cosita soon!

Raiza, Bettyeanne and I both own "Casitas", which are little fiberglass travel trailers. Casita, of course, means "little house." You'll have to bring your little "Cosita" to visit us when we're camping in our Casitas!

Hi Higgin's Mom: hahahah you just reminded me of my sister in law. She has a female Rottweiler and she looooves her next door Chinese Pug friend. You just has to say "Abby, wanna go and see Crisse?" (the Chinese pug) and she goes "au" (doggie language) and she moves with excitement. When Abbi sees Crisse, Crisse gets totally wet from Abbi's kisses. It is just so cute to see these two giving love to each other.

dogs are just something ...!

The reason I think taping is silly,is because it looks silly and MUST be so uncomfortable for the poor dog.I live in spain and taping isnt done here, and I see lots of yorkies lately..all with pointed ears.Iv always thought (and still think) that if the ears are going to flop, they´ll do so no matter how many rolls of tape you wrap them in...and if theyre going to stand, they´ll do so without any help from us.
I just keep the hair on the ears VERY short, thats the only thing I think really helps. As I said before,Lady has always had pointed ears, but Jess still has one ear down Shes 3 months old (27-04-04) and Im not bothered with helping it up..I mean, how many yorkies have floppy ears? Iv seen hundreds and thousands of yorkie pictures and yorkies and not one has had floppy ears..and Im sure that not every one tapes them. Its true that when you read about "standard",the ears are supposed to be erect, but really this just means that as a rule, they stand..not that having one ear down will break the standard. If your yorkie is your pet and not a show dog, standard is not an issue anyway..it can weigh 14lb´s and have floppy ears and STILL be a great looking yorkie

hahahhaha yes, That is funny. My husband came one day and he says:
"you know, now that you named her, now I see that name every where"
I say: "Where?" then he tells me and spells it "C-a-s-i-t-a".... I say:
"no no no no, that means little house!" He is like: "Uh, I am now confused" LOL .. he got it later on!! Well, somehow hubby needs to learn some words in Spanish!

Raiza: I don't quite remember how old Yoda was when we started taping. But we used the tape for a month or two. We used duct tape and sort of padded the middle parts thicker so that part would hold up better. It was taped up sort of like a cross, with the up and down part thicker, if that makes any sense. Yes, he did hate it, but he did get used to it and he couldn't get it off. We would take the tape off before baths, and then see how the ears were. If they were still floppy, we put the tape back on. Eventually it did stay up. I think at first we didn't know we had to shave the hair on the ears, so it was weighing it down a bit...

Hi Chelsie,

I guess you are right, but I still want to give a try.. i don't want to go later on and say I never helped when I see her ear still down.. I just want to say, "well that is the way it was meant to be"..... and you are right, tapping must be uncomfortable.. .. i don't know, we'll see.

BTW, I love Spain, I was there once (Madrid, Santander and Sevilla). I liked Sevilla the most!
