| Hello! I am a new Mom to a sweet 3lb. Yorky registered as "Mary's Twinkling Star" but affectionately known as "Twinkle". We adopted her from my sister in law's family as Twinkle is not show quality due to being very petite (3lbs. and 1 1/2 years old) and thin coat on the body. First delimma is I am not sure what type of yorkie she ...her coat that is there is long, so soft and fine that it feels like baby hair. I want to groom her and cut her myself. She is not timid or nippy at others but I would like to care for her needs myself as her Mom. I have tried to look for some simple instructions to the cut/styling the hair around the face, eyes and applying a small bow...but have come up with nothing. Second issue is training her to go into a litter box. Since we have had her she is good at using the "puppy pads" we lay out and uses those for void and elimination. However, I would like to keep her going on the pad and not the occassional mishap of my son's comforter/ bed. She is so tiny that going outside poses a problem as in the morning there is dew on the lawn and she is saturated and shaking before being successful. We live in Minnesota and with her petite size and lack of coat there is no realistic way to consider her using the lawn full time. We have cats and so litter training is realistic. I work full time and that seems the reasonable choice. Any ideas out there? My sister in law had Twinkle fixed, vaccinated and the recent tests show she is free from the issues with kidneys and liver for now. Her only history so far was a brief problem with being hypoglycemic which has been not a issue for several months. I am interested in advice or experiences with these fragile dogs so I am prepared to care for and enjoy our time together. |

| Thank You for the Welcome to this site. I have posted two pictures for others to see how sparse and fine her coat is for reference. Advice is appreciated as I am concerned about sunburn and maintaining what she does have for hair. Her skin is very visiable let alone a prime target for sun. I do have a book on Chinese Crested Dogs as I almost chose one before Twinkle. Should I care for her is the same manner? |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | congrats and welcome!! one way to train them to use a litter box is to start by putting the pee pad in there. make sure everytime she eats/drinks you take her to it. good luck!!!

| Thank you for the welcome. I was reading different threads in here and noticed your memorial page. I can't imagine the experience of losing any of our pets. My heart aches at the thought. I read that you mentioned something about a harness being involved. As Twinkle is tiny I have thought about it concerned that a collar al;one is rough for her petite neck. May I ask what happened? I would rather avoid anything that could bring harm to her as she is very tiny for a Yorkie. Your advice is greatly valued...I only wish you had your beloved baby instead of answering my question. Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Congratulations on your Twinkles - what a cute name !! Here's some grooming help and a good shampoo may help with the hair - http://www.ytca.org/grooming_clips1.html The only experience with products I have are the Chris Christensen Systems -and Plush Puppy products - you may want to check into these - I groom my girls myself now after not being able to find a good groomer and find if you study other yorkies - you can follow the lines of the cuts they have.... OR.... go to a good groomer - write down what you want done and hope for the best ! |

| Welcome to you and Twinkles to Yorkie Talk. I personally don't use the "litter box" just puppy pads so can't give you any advise towards this...But Schatzie and I just wanted to say "HELLO and WELCOME!"

| Thanks Again... To all who are so generous with their information that will assist Twinkle's and our family to keep her safe, healthy and happy. A question if I may? Twinkle's coat is so sparse on her body. It is like angel hair on her back and legs. Just floats in the breeze. Her skin in dark on her trunk/body and can be seen underneath upclose. Is there reason for the thin coat? She is a very light colored yorkie with almost a silver appearance on the body and a light tan on her head and legs. Again, Twinkle was available to us from my sister in law to adopt because she was not able to be shown due to size (3lbs) and lack of coat. We love her beyond measure and have no interest in doing anything but that...love her. Is it common for Yorkies to be 3lbs? Could she be a runt? I am just interested as any new Mom is. I know nothing when it comes to these tiny Yorkies. We will be getting a harness for walks and otherwise leaving the collars completely off due to risks. Just the other day my husband found Twinkle walking around with her mouth open. When he got close up he realized she had her breakaway collar in her mouth and around her neck kind of like a horse and biting on it! That was the end of her wearing it except to walk! I was about to go to G.W. Little and buy a cute collar and leash set. Now I guess I will buy her some shirts instead. Thanks Again for the feed back, Twinkle's Mom |
