We have Ms. Hilton to thank for some of this. She feels that carrying around her Chi Chi is a fasion statement and in her words "That's Hot". But it's not hot it's stupid. Our young children watch these music videos and want to run out and get a puppy for all the wrong reasons. And when the thrill is gone they throw the puppy to the side like last year's Coach purse. These puppies are being sold to young to people that have no ideal in what it takes to maintain the health of not only yorkies but any puppy. I am a owner of 3 small dogs soon to be 4. 2 Chi Chi's (I got mine when taco bell dog got popular) and 2 yorkies. I take my dogs where ever I go/ or can take them and I hate when people just pet my dogs too! I did my research on chi chi's and yorkies before I got one. These young people need to do the same instead of just jumping in and buying one because it's the "in" thing.

Sad

I agree.

When I know for a fact that someone wants a puppy solely based on the fact that it compliments their outfits or gets them attention.. it makes me mad. I don't think any puppy should be subjected to that life because in the long run when the Yorkie is no longer considered "teacup" or "cutesy".. it's neglected. It makes me sad!

What I am going to say will not be popular as I disagree with the majority of the posts here.

I won't get on my soapbox against calling people names like "dumb" and "stupid" and "idiotic" because the adults here know that they are setting an example for the younger members and they will behave as they feel is appropriate. I have been down that road as a member already pointed out.

Natalie, I am not trying to defend her, but could it be that the girl with the new puppy was on her way home after having "just picked it up" and maybe stopped at the mall to buy the carrier and some other things for the puppy? I just believe in giving people I do not know the benefit of the doubt. She sounds like she was trying to be nice but was maybe a little overwhelmed by the attention and she didn't let anyone else hold the puppy, right?

I am not concerned about the use of the term"teacup yorkie" because it is a common description of the extreme tinies, no matter how much we may not like it.

I am not a huge Paris Hilton fan, but she has owned her little dog Tinkerbell for some time now and she is always with her. I do not think that Paris treats her like a fashion accessory. If she did, she wouldn't always have her. She would only have her when it was convenient for her. I choose to believe that she loves that dog like we love our babies and that she is setting a good example by the way she takes such good care of her. She has not "thrown this puppy aside like last year's coach purse" and I hope she never will.

I also saw the picture of Whitney Houston and her yorkie too and he was a bigger yorkie, definitely not a tiny so she didn't get rid of him because he no longer fit in her pocket.

I guess I just don't like the negative energy in this thread and wanted to show the other, hopefully, more positive side. I don't like to see puppies abused either but I don't think we have any evidence of abuse in this case.

I think Natalie did the right thing by referring her here to YT and I hope she takes the advice and becomes a member, but I hope she never reads this thread.

I kind of have to agree with Kim on this...although I think taking a baby at that age out could be iffy. I do notice that a lot of people on the boards can be very judgemental of "outsiders" owning yorkies because "we" think that they are just following a fad or being trendy. What makes "us" any more worthy to own a yorkie than anyone else??? Why did anyone on this forum get their yorkie? People may see me on the street; I'm young - relatively - and have a cute doggie with a cute carrier and I carry him everywhere, etc... and they make think that I am an idiot and not the responsible pet owner that I am. It's time to step down off the soapbox on this matter.

Kim & Gerry, well said! Couldn't have put it better myself. As a somewhat " yorkie talk newbie" myself, I do feel that, although responding with the best of intentions, some of the responses to some of the discussions can be taken as judgemental & even derogatory by other members. I hope the young girl from the mall does join Yorkie Talk as she will find it a fountain of helpful information & resources...I know I did. Like Kim though, I also hope she doesn't read this thread & get her feelings hurt.

Yeah ignorance is bad.
I brought Kali to a meeting when she was 9 weeks and 3 days because I didn't want to leave her alone. My breeder told me I was lucky nothing happened to her and now I learned my lesson - they have to be 12 weeks and have 2 parvo vaccines because you take them out.
But after that by all means do take them out - they will get used to go with you and meet a lot of people. And that will make them bark less when confronted with strangers

Like SoCalyorkiLvr said I also like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

This week I was at Petco and saw 3 young lady's came in and one put this fur ball on the floor that started walking. I was leaving but I turned around and had to ask "What is that?" one girl replied "It's a girl Palm... she is 8 wks, I just got her". Then I notice the doggie was eating or licking something off the floor . I tried not to raise my voice and watch my words but in my head I screamed!!

I quickly told her to pick her up not to let her eat, lick or touch the floor. I explained to her that other people bring their dogs and they poop on the floor sometimes and I went on to explain about puppy shots, illness, along with her not touching other animals and going home without washing her hands and told her to do a lot of research on the net.

She was very thankful for my info. Then I notice something black behind the pups ear , I pointed out what I saw and told her the pup had fleas.

A lot of people don't know much or at times anything about the dogs they get, I was one once. Now, I try to help them just like those many that helped me.

Job well done lovmyyorkie! (both in giving the information & your kind understanding of the girl's ignorance) Good example of how to educate people without alienating them. Your helpful conversation probaly helped to raise the quality of the little "palm's" life.

What a great idea. Some people can be so rude about petting without asking.

It's also good to know that I should wait until 16 months... I wasn't sure when it was ok to take little Roxy out. I LOVE THIS FORUM!

Jacki:
It's fine to take Rox out before 16 months as long as she's had all her shots. I took Chewy for his rabies 2 weeks after the last set and even had him walking before the rabies. BTW: we tried to clink into your dogster page to become pals and something's not working. Will you try Chewy's link?

She's getting one of her sets of shots this week. I am going to ask the vet when she thinks is the appropriate time-- can't ever be too safe! Now I'm a little paranoid, too

Sorry about Dogster not working- I think I've screwed something up going from home to work and back!

Kim I am sorry but I don't agree with you. A 7 week old puppy really should not be away from its mother led alone dragged to a mall. I got Chachi when he was 5 weeks old and he became stressed ann sick from being overhandled. The young ones really can't take much. My vet and breeder told me not to take my pups out. Surely someone has told her the same.

I am so hoping this girl will decide to join YT so that she can be educated about 'teacups'.

I completely understand.... I saw a lady with a Yorkie pup at the ballpark a few months ago and went over to introduce myself and Tatum (she always go to my daughter's games with us). This Yorkie was not too little/young to be out (I think he was about 5 months old) - that wasn't the problem - the problem was that this lady's probably 4-5 year old daughter was **dragging** this poor pup around with a leash attached to a collar around it's neck! The poor dog was choking and fighting and trying to bite her which only made the kid treat it even rougher. That's why I had to go talk to them. I tried explaining very nicely on a "kid level" to the little girl how to treat the puppy thinking that she would listen to me better than her mother. I also tried to tell the mom a little about harnesses (which Tatum had on) vs. collars and a few other things. She just didn't seem to want to listen. It was very frustrating. All you can do is try to educate these people but it's not always successful, unfortunately.

This is so sad. My son is always asking me to hold Chewy's leash and my answer is always the same, "Until you can handle the dog, you cannot lead the dog". Listen, this topic will always be a hot one at YT. I think yorkies are great and I wanted one because they are so friggin' cute, but I did A LOT of homework before my little guy came to me and when people tell me, "OH, I want one" I tell them that these are great dogs but read at least 2 books and everything you can find on the internet; that's what I did. Although now I can refer them to YT as well
