| Yorkie the right pet for me? I am a mother of two children age 19, 15 living in New England and going through a divorce. I just bought a condo. I am seriously considering adding a yorkie to my family. In addition to all the great things I've learned about them that make me want to have one, I have read that they can be difficult to potty train and some bark a lot. I also am at work for 8 hours a day although I can come home at lunch time most days. I'm hesitant mostly because of the barking issue since I don't want to be seen as a bad neighbor almost as soon as a move into the condo complex. Any thoughts/suggestions? |

| Some yorkies are barkers but they usually arent when they are young puppies. I would move into your condo and get situated first and then consider getting a yorkie

| Yes - I'd definitely wait til I'm in and settled. Another thought I had is that it might be better to wait 'til spring rather than trying to potty train a youngster during the very unpredictable New England winter!! |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | You will feel better... Nothing better to brighten your mood and that of your children then to have a little pup around. I recently lost my beloved Brandy, an 11.5 year old Rottweiler. I had her since she was 9 weeks and it was truly devasting. Everyone said take the time to grieve and not to jump to quickly into getting another dog. But I don't regret it. Georgia is a handful, but right now, that is just what the doctor ordered! I am so busy with her that it takes my mind off of all the petty day to day things and keeps me from being depressed. I still cry all the time, but she gives me this look like "what did I do?" and I just tell her I love her I just miss her big sister. Going through seperation is never a fun mood lifting time. But think about it like this...puppy training takes work but its worth not thinking of all the things that pissed and piss you off about your ex! Your mantra will be: I rather clean this piss then sit here being pissed! ahaha! And enjoy your future with a LOYAL and LOVING companion that never fails! |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Oops lol... Georgia is 8 months old. I bought her 2 weeks ago almost. And she is kinda sorta paper trained. Whenever she wakes up, she almost immediately has to pee. I don't free feed her (leave food out all day) I just feed her in the morning and the evening and a treat in between. It's not that much work. But since she is so little I just want to make sure I have an eye on her at all times. I bought a mini playpen (graco travel lite) and I keep her in there when I am at work for now. At night she sleeps in there as well, right in my room. If I stay up watching tv, I have to cover 3 sides of the playpen and she falls alseep. I am turning a walk in closet in my condo into a playroom for her to be in while I am at work. Its much bigger and will have pargo wood flooring so it will be easier to clean up. Some people would probably gate them in a kitchen during the day. She does not really bark much, matter of fact she is right her in her kennel with me at work!!! Everyone has commented on how quiet she is being! I wish I could bring her everyday! |

| Wow- you're pretty lucky you get to bring her to work - somehow I don't think they'd appreciate that in a dental office!! How long is your work day? |

| As another said, I would move into your new place and get situated first... Potty training issues - YES! No doubt its not that easy, but if your consistant - you should have no problems... My lil one is 7 mo and shes pretty good at the potty training, she rarely has accidents... Barking - NO... I havent had any problems... she only barks when she needs me (we have two story and she sleeps downstairs).... Hope this helps

| Mine was a barker when she was a puppy but we worked really hard with her to curb this. She hardly barks now. Maybe when you're looking at breeders, ask them what each puppy's temperment is. On the other hand, at our local meetup, I've seen some yorkies bark up a storm. |

| So sorry to hear that somethings aren't going so great but a new puppy will bring so much joy and happiness to your home. I will distract you during such a difficult time and keep you occupied Potty training may seem like work but these beautiful dogs make up for it in personality. |

| I don't know if a Yorkie is a good dog for a condo, because they sure can be barkers. Maybe a toy poodle, maltese, or morkie might work out better.

| Zoe barks a lot less than other dogs we have had. We have a collie and she is a real barker at times so I correct them immediately and Zoe really doesn't bark much. My sister has a yorkie too and he isn't a barker either. But really, every dog is different. Yes, the housebreaking can be difficult though. Zoe did really good on the pee pads and then I decided to train her to go outside and we have had some accidents. By the way, she's 8 months. I would say a yorkie is a good dog for a condo environment but I can see why you would want to wait until spring as well. Good Luck! |

| Honestly, I would never get a yorkie if I had to live in a rental/condo type arrangement. Many MANY of our posters here have had to go to hardwood floors because of potty training problems. Mine are two and one, and I clean up accidents every day. Also, sorry to be the naysayer on this issue, but the barking can be BAD. I don't even consider my girls to be extreme barkers, but yes, they do bark like maniacs when someone comes to the door....and when something outside catches their attention. I'd be hesitant....esp. if you aren't going to be home most of the day to try to silence them. You might want to look into the MALTESE breed. They are another toy breed that are loved by many yorkie owners....but they have the general reputation of being more laidback than yorkies. Good luck!
