| Yep...they love that cat poop! Having a covered litter box helps. I have the Booda Dome one that has little steps and the litter box is actually to the side. It make it a little harder for the dog to get into because they have to climb all the way into the litter box. Also, keep that poop cleaned out as soon as you notice it in there.

| I agree the domed cover one's work the best, and keeping the litter box clean helps.

| If covered box doesn't work, maybe you should move the box to place he can't get to. At my brother's house he has a cat door leading to the basement where the liter box is, Chip is too big for the cat door so he just resorts to eating the cat food in the kitchen |

YT 500 Club Member | Our puppy kindergarten teacher said that this is very normal, and she did not have an answer for this. She said dogs just do this. We have our litter box in the basement and a baby gate at the top of the stairs. (We have a split-entry home with finished basement and no door). Thankfully, Sophie has become accustomed to the fact that she does not belong downstairs.

| yeah the catbox is covered but he's still finding ways inside. I guess I"ll just have to get very inventive! maybe find some boards to stand the catbox on so that he just can't reach in there anymore. thank goodness cats can jump |

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Yup - Izzy has the same issue....our cat box is downstairs in the rec room and my husband made this little board that goes across the doorway - high enough that Izzy can't jump over it (she is little) but low enough for our cats to jump over to do their business. That's the only way we can stop her from digging in the cat box....yuck.

| do you clean the litterbox out daily? I clean mine in the morning and and the evening. I also will clean it if I see (or smell) that there is poop in there. the best thing you can do to prevent it is to keep the poop cleaned out of there.

| EEEEWWW!!!...Isn't that gross when they want to do that! I had this problem a few years ago so I went out and purchased a Rubbermaid tub that had sides that are about 8 in. high so he wasn't able to lean down in to it to reach the litter...if you fill it up too high with litter then it will defeat the purpose....it worked great....

| Rowdy got in the litter box this summer and it made him very very sick - in fact, he spent the weekend at the hospital with a bad intestional infection. We didn't realize at the time what he was doing, but I caught him in the litter box the day we got home, so I'm sure that was what was wrong. Now, I have the litter box elevated where the cat can jump on a table and then into the litter box, but Rowdy can't get to it.

| Welcome to the club! Sugar has the same disgusting habit. She doesn't eat her food straight from her bowl, she carries it by the mouthful to wherever I am to eat it...and she did the same thing w/ the poop. NASTY! My litter box is in my laundry room and I hated to do it but I put up a baby gate to block her out. Of course we exit the house through the laudry room so I'm getting plenty of exercise stepping over the gate to do laundry, lifting my girls over it when we enter/exit the house, stepping over it w/ bags of groceries...but it does keep Sugar from eating the poop. Good luck!

| all my cats usually "go" in the morning so it's easy to keep the box clean....but the teacher is right....it is normal ....I feed raw diet and just read in a new book that dogs in the wild eat everything including "that" sometimes...but raw or not raw I DO have my limits and there will be no poop eating allowed!!!!LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOl |

| .......RowdysMom.....this brings up a very good point.....a friend called me last week to ask if there was some ingredient in my kitty litter.....not sure what it was and the "ingredients" weren't listed on my litter bag........I wonder if your doggie got sick on the litter???....I have been trying to find a litter that has no perfumes but is effective....cheap stuff does not absorb but higher priced litters seemed to have the odor protectors which now I feel could be very hazardous.....I use Fresh Step but I think those little pellets might be not so good...does anyone out there know of a good environmental litter................I'm glad your baby is ok! |
