Our puppy kindergarten teacher said that this is very normal, and she did not have an answer for this. She said dogs just do this. We have our litter box in the basement and a baby gate at the top of the stairs. (We have a split-entry home with finished basement and no door). Thankfully, Sophie has become accustomed to the fact that she does not belong downstairs.
