| Big Birds! Took Teddy outside a few minutes ago and while he was roaming the yard I heard some birds in what seemed like a fight in the trees above. Looked up and there was a hawk or some other VERY large bird chasing the smaller group of birds! I scooped up Teddy right away and now I'm afraid to let him out without his leash. We have a very large yard and they go out without a leash but never alone. They do thier bussiness and play and never leave the yard. I brought Teddy in and put his leash on him and then went back out. The whole time he would walk alittle and then turn around and look at me as if to say what the heck are you doing with that leash?! I didn't see the bird when we went back out I hope he doesn't hang around. Kim

| That must have been scarey. I can understand why you would get the leash out even if Teddy couldn't.

| That's my biggest fear - HAWKS!!! I never let Kalina out alone and, even when though I'm there I let my cat out with her. Birds don't like cats so I'm thinking of my cat as Kalina's babysitter of sorts.

| I usually take both Teddy and my big Golden out at the same time but sometimes I make the Golden stay inside because when she goes out all she wants to do is play and I would just rather sometimes that Teddy does his bussiness and come back in. I think I'll make sure they go together from now on. Maybe a hawk will think twice about coming down for Teddy when there is an 80lb dog near by. I hope! Kim

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | I deal with this every year. Most birds of prey do not feed on a yorkie sized animal...I actually took a picture of the hawk stalking my yard and sent it to DNR they explained all this to me BUT if it is a Coopers Hawk....they are the most Vicious of all birds...they do not hunt to eat all the time they hunt for the thrill of killing....Sad but true. Can you try and get a pic? Hopefully he wont come back but if he does identifying him is really important. They do look totally different than any other hawk besides one other that is kinda rare. Mine did end up being a Cooper and I have to stand over my babies outside everytime and they do not migrate so I am stuck with him

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Okay here is some info I have found below are the Goshawk (pic1) and Coopers hawk (pic2) Coopers Hawk-: Feeds mostly on birds, but also takes small mammals. Perches, waits, and quickly swoops down to seize prey; also pursues prey on the ground, half running, and half flying; known for raiding poultry yards. A Cooper's Hawk captures a bird with its feet, and will squeeze it repeatedly to kill it. It does not bite the prey to kill it in the fashion of falcons, but holds it away from its body until it dies. It has been known to drown its prey, holding a bird under water until it stops moving. Northern Goshawk is larger, with a very stout body. The goshawk is striped light gray below and has a strong white eyestripe. Its tail is shorter and broader, and the wings are longer and less rounded. Juvenile goshawk has distinct, but not white, eyestripe, thick streaks below on a buffy background, and an irregularly barred tail. Feeds on Medium-sized birds and mammals. One of these 2 is most likely what you have....Most other species of Hawks/Falcons feed in forests, fields, and on the water. The 2 about are city hunters preying on back yard feeders. A quick way to tell them apart if you can tell...the goshawks featehrs go almost down to the talon a Coopers has a more bare yellow leg and talons! And I am certain your 80 pounder is heping...my Father in law lived in Alaske with a poodle and a rottie, the rotties job was to NEVER leave Brandy's side the eagles there are ABUNDANT and a breeding ground...He feared for Brandy everyday he let her out...She was fine though died of old age a happy little alaska girl!!

| I didn't get the best look at him butI would say he looked very much like the first photo. Great pics! Thanks for posting them. We lived in Alaska and saw the eagles quite regularly. I didn't worry then though as Teddy was just a baby our last year there and I never let him outside without his leash. Besides it was too cold for him as a baby most of the time. I will definately not be letting him out any more without Chloe to protect him! Kim

| Someone was just recently warning me about taking small animals outside without a leash. She said that she had heard just recently a couple of cases where small dogs were picked up by hawks.

| wow it is funny that you posted this when you did. Just yeaterday Mike was sitting on the patio and all of the babies were outside in the yard with him. He yelled for me to "come here fast" When I got outside he was holding Mom and the 2 babies (they are the smallest) and said a hawk had just swooped down in our yard. It then landed on our storage shed in the back corner and flew off right as I was coming outside. We watched for it for a while and didn't see it again. .... Until about 10 minutes later as I walked out front to check the mail. There it was flying around above our neighborhood. Now I live out in the middle of the Mojave Desert and there are lots of hawks and some eagles and a bazillion HUge black crows. I don't worry about the crows, but I think I am going to be watching mine much closer now. That was scary. Sonya

Scary! Sounds like he was watching your little ones! At least the one I saw over my yard was busy chasing birds for his lunch!

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | At the local golf course here we have a Eagle nest about 2 miles away...the eagle feeds outside the club house on a huge stocked pond everyday fish and muskrat. The closest house is about 300 yards from the club house the Eagle decided to go for their Pug!! He picked him up and then realized he was a lil heavier than he thougth and dropped him...that or just lost grip but i doubt that. The eagle uses its talon to puncture the lungs of prey so the Pug did have a puntured lung and a few broken ribs but lived (thank gawd) The owner watched the whole thing happen!!!

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | I find birds very amazing...I have no idea why...I sit out side and take pics of them, I probably have about 5 bird books...and read on them all the time. My Dad shares the same love and he like in Ky so we have fun trying to compare lists of birds we see and get in our yards lol I think its fun! But yes, very scary when it comes to birds of prey
