I meant I've never seen any show-quality yorkies come out of petstores (or anything show-quality), but I did say I've seen a lot of cute puppies. There is a girl I recently met that has an adorable yorkie that she bought from a petstore....show quality, no, but adorable

Nope, not what I meant either. I meant the breeders and millers breeding something they 'call' a Yorkie, not caring what the parents look like or what the pups end up as and then when questioned about it claim, "well, I'm only breeding the dogs to be pets."

I think you left out the show part of quality in that thread. Now it makes sense. I feel so much better!! Thank You!!! Makes me wonder how Winstin will be when he is bigger.

I guess I just get defensive about Livi because there are those that have said that partis are "ruining the breed". I look at her in awe because she is breathtaking....absolutely stunning in person! Yes,I know,I am biased in my opinion because she's mine. :rolleyes:

When a show breeder breeds they are lucky to get one show dog out of two or three litters to possibly show and the others are sold as pets to be neutered.

I love our breed and it is beginning to look like something that I can't even recognize anymore and I feel education is the answer.

There are many ways to make a living but when you a dealing with a living animal I think you owe them more than if you were selling a used car.

MyFairLacy isnt saying that they HAVE to be shown. But if you plan to breed, they need to be show quality. ALL yorkies make great pets, but some just shouldnt be bred. And yes, its b/c they dont fit the standard, no matter how cute. Only the best yorkies should be bred, thats the only way to better the breed.

And I 100% agree.

And in my opinion, any breeder who loves and is dedicated to the breed, would write in the contract that the puppy MUST be spayed/nuetered (for any puppy that they KNOW will not be show quality.)

Yes it is. I was just getting ready to tell you I like your avatar picture. I do apologize if I got rude or to blunt with you. I just took things way to personal. I felt like a mom with her daggers out and my babies were under attack. :p

I think thats what most of it is, Hurt feelings and all us mommys out to protect our baby's, They are like our children and it hurts when you think one is talking down on them.
But I think we all get along most of the time.:D

I know this is kindof random but something I'm proud of..LOL. I have a 10 month old Himalayan from a fantastic show breeder. She was out of a litter of 7 kittens and she kept four for show. I thought that was impressive - 4 show quality kittens out of a litter of 7. And they only fault mine has is that her nose is just a tad too long (they really have to have that extreme face - it's like the deciding thing in the show ring - like coat for yorkies)..so my baby just had one fault. Anyway...doesn't exactly relate to the thread but your comment made me think of it and I just thought it was pretty awesome

I think we all have to remember that all of our babies are adorable! No one is personally talking about anyone's dog not being cute and the best pet out there. It's just that when talking about breeding and all we have to talk about quality in general. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my baby but I know she's not show quality

First of all I want to say I agree with this 100%. I am probably going to open a whole can of worms with this but this is what I mean when I said breeders are in between a rock and a hard place. I hear all about bettering the breed and I understand it BUT if show breeders are the only ones to breed yorkies and they spay and neuter all of the dogs that they dont keep for their own, then how are they possibly bettering the breed with their spayed and neutered progeny?

I agree with the previous poster. You have been doing your homework. Good for you. And you are so right, there is no way to know if your yorkie is of breeding quality or standard if you aren't attending shows and/or it isn't evaluated by a judge.

If you ever get interested in showing yorkies, it is a long hard road, but I do hope I get to meet you in the ring sometime or even at a show site.

I think they have them spayed and neutered because they had faults and wouldn't do well in the ring. So since they wouldn't be beneficial to their breeding program because of the faults, they place them in pet homes. And they spay and neuter them so that the owners won't breed dogs with faults.

I'm really glad you posted on here. It's good to see a show-breeder's prospective, and hopefully others will see that just because I don't show or breed that I have paid attention to what show breeders say. I love seeing you and the other show-breeders post on here because I constantly learn a lot from you all, and of course I LOVE seeing the picture you all post. I just wish you still lived in Texas...:D

Wow, I guess show quality is pretty strick. I would love to see a picture of her. I have a plain old cat that is a brat to say the least. But, I love her. My mom says she has my attitude. Her name is Sasha
Here she is as well as my other two dogs. The dogs are with my nieces, this was a couple years ago.

I understand why they have them spayed and neutered and I dont disagree with it. Maybe I am not asking the question correctly or it isnt coming out like I want it to come out. LOL...It is late.

Let me explain a bit here. And I can only explain from my experiences. I breed 1 or 2 litters a year for myself in search for my next Champion to add to my breeding program. Now in doing this I'm breeding in hopes to breed the 1 dog that has that special "It" factor. That doesn't mean that the rest of the puppies aren't up to standard but they don't have that special look at me "I'm It" quality and "I dare you not to put me up".....that quality is very necessary and part of the standard. The sad thing about this is that I can't keep all the puppies, so those 3 or 4 puppies a year are placed in preapproved pet homes on a spay/nueter contract. Why? because I would have too many of the same pedigree and would be inbreeding.

Show breeders breed for the standard of the breed and to better their own stock by keeping the best of the litter and spay/neutering the ones that arent the best. The best are then shown and evaluated before they are ever breed. I believe thats how they "better" the breed by spay/neutering. Lynn

Here are the problems I would see with wanting to show my retrievers,
Sable- black lab- is to thick boned. Even though her face is beautiful. Although the pic did not show it that well.
Sandie-my golden is just plain to heavy. We had her to vet for blood work and she checked out ok, no thyroid problems or anything. We just had to cut her food. She is 85 pounds way to heavy for a golden. Thats our fault.
I am curious to learn about showing although I am sure I will never do it in the future with any pet. I have heard its a lot of work but very interesting.

I was just making a point as to why these threads get heated, members feelings get hurt.
My feelings wasnt hurt. But I think my Yorkies are perfect.:D

Oh...I forgot something..LOL. I also meant to say, so I think they're improving the breed by only breeding those that they deem show quality and keep for their breeding program. Then, even the offspring that have a few faults and are spayed/neutered are still very close to the standard...therefor keeping the breed close to show-quality. Is that what you were asking?

I am not certain; but don't some breeders keep a pup from an excellent line that may have a minor flaw that they breed with other dogs that are strong where that pup is weak in order to improve their line? Like a pup that is well bred; but may not have the best color can be bred to a dog with superb color to improve the line? Just asking, not arguing. I think every one should do all they can to keep the quality of yorkies as high as possible; but isn't breeding to improve the line an excepted practice?:confused:

Yeah I understand that. I guess I just always try to not take things personally. I know I'm opinionated so I don't mind hearing others opinions as well...as long as no one is being rude :)

I'm seen many show breeders say that there is no perfect dog out there (although a lot of them look perfect to me)..that each one will have some type of flaw. So, yes, when breeding they do have to look for another dog that is strong in the area that the other is weaker. Getting into all that gets pretty complicated though and I don't know enough to explain it any more than that.
