Hi Chris,

Welcome to YT! I'm in Lubbock, so I'm a little closer to you and my mom and grandmom are in Artesia, NM (between Carlsbad and Roswell), so they're even closer. Just wanted you to know you have some YT'ers in the general vacinity. As far as advice goes, there is tons of it on here. If you use the search function, you will find tons of threads on everything from food, to beds, to crate training, flea and tick treatment, you name it and I bet there has been a thread about it. And of course, if you have any questions, just post and ask away. Oh, and by the way, your little girl is such a cutie!

Thank you to everyone!!!! Thanks for all the great advice. I just got a terrible phone call, my wife called me and told me Mia is full if ticks.

I need to take her to the vet ASAP.

Chris:
Call your breeder and tell them that the puppy has ticks because others in the litter will probably have them as well. Start removing as many as you can and get to teh vet ASAP.

Someone told me to bathe the dog with Dawn dish soap or rinse her in vinager. Would this work?

It probably wouldn't hurt, if you blow dry her, be careful not to burn her. use a low or fluff setting. She is too young for flea/tick treatments, I would just see if you can get an appointment asap and I am sure she will be fine. They are icky, but the vet can use the proper treatment for babies. You certainly don't want to poison her.

I also wanted to mention about brushing. even though they dont need a lot of brushing at first, it will really get them used to being brushed. otherwise, by the time she needs it, she may hate it. That was my biggest mistake

This is more of what you may be looking for IMO. You need to get the smallest crate you can find and then stuff the back with blankets or something and leave only a small place for puppy to be. The smaller the space the less they will go in their cage. be aware though that your pup is very, very young and will probably have accidents still. Don't get mad just clean up and give her love. For the first 2 weeks, Chewy was basically in his cage. He was let out to potty and have supervised play and then put away to sleep. I would also wake up every night for 3 weeks (you may need to do more) at 3:30 AM to let him out to pee. Buy some wee wee pads and when you take Mia out, go directly to the pad. She will potty there and then praise her a lot.

What is the situation with the ticks? Have you gone to the vet yet? If you don't mind, may I ask where you got the puppy from? You need to gain lots of info about the breed; they are so high maintenance. Can you refer to where you got her from for any advice? We are all here to give you any advice you need because the next month will be very hectic for you.

How long would I use the crate? You will need a crate for a long while. Some people continue throughout their lives, some people stop when they are potty trained.

Would I use it as her bed? yes

If we leave her do I leave her in there? At this age you would ever want to leave her out. It is not safe. She could get into elecrical wires and get shocked or something could fall on her...always leave her in the crate when you are gone.

Do I stop using it after a certain age and get her a doggy bed? You can.

I bought a little cage for my babies. It folds out to a 4x4' square, no top or bottom. It hooks together. It folds to a 2' x 2' x 2", so you can take it outside, too. In the house, I put the crate inside and leave it open (actually I took the door off.) I put a puppy pad, a floor mat with their food and water on it and toys. The puppy's are safe, and so is the house. I have even heard of the puppies eating the walls when they are very young. Mine learned to pee on the pad very quickly. After about a month, they never did. They are not very expensive if they are not used!

Now they are 1 1/2 years old, they still stay in their cages at night and sometimes when I am gone. I leave the cage open all the time, because they sleep in there, eat, drink when they want. They drag all their toys to the living room in front of the TV.
