| Rawhide bones are dangerous for Yorkies? I was at PetSmart the other day to pick up some bones and I had a thing of rawhide bones. I had lil Bubba with me and a worker had seen me carrying the bones and Bubba and asked if I was buying those for him. I told her yah and she told me that regular rawhide bones are bad for small breeds...the rawhide can expand in them and cause all kinds of health problems...she told me to get the compressed rawhide bones...and I did...has anyone ever heard of rawhide bones being harmful for small breeds? We always gave them to Tyke and he was fine with them...certainly won't be giving anymore of them to either dogs. I don't understand how regular rawhide bones can be bad...but yet the compressed rawhide bones are ok...I mean...aren't they still made of rawhide?? --Sissa

| I've heard that about raw hydes. We used to feed them to my Lab and she didn't have any problems, but I won't give them to Stewie.

| They are fine for bigger dogs but a no-no for smaller breeds. |

| I agree with all of you. I don't give Tino and Bunny any "digestable" chewies. Not even greenies... they can all get impacted and cause death. I know that ANYTHING you give your dog can be ingested and potentially dangerous, but I simply cannot watch every single bite that they take and have decided that their only chewy will be Nylabones and Smart Greeenies, just to be safe! I don't want to take the chance!

| Ummmmm I was informed by someone who owns a yorkie that it was ok to give them EXERHIDE. It is something for them to chew on when they are teething. Rascal loves them, He just chews on them, actually I havent had any problems with him chewing on anything. He justs chews on his exerhides. Is this wrong to do? I thought I was doing something ok since another yorkie owner was doing it to. |

| Any vet I have been too says that all rawhides are bad. They all tell me about how they have to surgically remove the rawhide because a lot of time instead of the dog passing it it builds up inside them - hence all the problems. I dont give my dogs any anymore.

| I ve heard even bad for big dogs. So I would just stay away form them. I like to stick to plush squeaky toys n or those rubber toys with the brissle teeth so it helps their gums and they enjoy knawing on them.

| I've heard that rawhide is bad as it can break off in small pieces and dogs can choke on it. Bully sticks (not going to say what part of a bull it's from) and flossies (dried tendon that looks like a curly fry) are recommended as they turn into a sludge when chewed and they can't choke on it. I give my boys both of these and they love them. |

| My vet said that rawhides are a definite no-no for these little babies. She suggested giving a frozen carrot instead! Rocky loves them! It helps with the teething AND is a great treat for the summer! |

| Rawhides are not good for any size dog, per our vet. The remaining pieces are swallowed whole, and could possible cause an obstruction in the colon. The rawhide swells like a dumpling, causing the blockage. Our vet says if you want to give them an animal part to chew on, then go with Quality Pigs Ears or Cow Hooves. We switched to Pigs Ears, and it has been remarkable on how well our Australian Cattle Dog's teeth look. Before we had to have them cleaned by our vet, due to tartar build up next to the gum line. Now, they are as white as a new puppy. I only give them the ears twice a week. Now, Maggie is a different story. She loves them too. We have proof of that. They are hidden under every cushion and pillow in the house.

| We give our yorkie rawhides but he never swallows it or anything. Even if he doesn't swallow it should we still not give it to him? What can be an alternate for rawhides? |

| I was told that dogs cannot digest rawhides. That right there is reason enough not to feed them besides the concern of them getting choked. I might try the frozen carrots. Mine love carrots and that would give them something they would probably enjoy chewing on. |

But she about died choking one night on a piece of rawhide, and I was very lucky to clear her airway. So, from personal experience, I would never ever recommend rawhide to any pet owner.
