YT 2000 Club Member | Blanket and crate Question Can you have a blanket and /Or pee pee pads in a crate with a new puppy? I am asking this because we are waiting for our breeder to have a boy for us and I am getting things ready now because it should be in December that we bring one home. Anyways my husband has informed me that I will not be able to put a blanket or anything for that matter in the crate because it teaches it to potty on things!??! I asked him were he got this information from and he said from his buddy that has a lab. Now mind you his dog is left alone from 7 am to 7 pm every day. I will be home ( or one of my boy's that are teen/pre teens) 24/7 as I am a stay at home mother. I was just wondering if this is true. I have not read that you can't put a blanket with a puppy in it's crate at night so I am confused!! Did you keep things out of the crate till potty training was completed? |

| We have 2 boys that are 4.5 months old. I have recently separated them to separate crates. Reason 1- So that we ALL get sleep at night =that way they can not play and keep us awake. Reason 2- So that we can tell who did what in their crates. We have their blanket and snuggle toy on one end and a potty pad on the other. Blanket usually over rides onto the pad...But soooo far no one has pottied on their blanket or their little snuggle toy. BTW the crate is not that big either...like maybe 24 x 20 ish??

| I think you'd be fine putting both in. Most dogs don't want to sleep where they go.

| I measured their crates. they are 18 x 24. And took a couple pics to let you get an idea of what we do. Of course, I had help...I do not know if it is right, but it is working for us...They usually hold it thru the night now...As long as I do not over sleep

| I do not put puppy pads in our crates. But then I use the only-big-enough-to-turn-around crate sizing. IMO, a puppy pad in the crate would encourage pooping and peeing in the crate and with the small size, I don't want that. I use a little blanky or towel that's easy to wash. Actually not having anything is messier than a blanket (or pad). If they pee and there's nowhere for it to go, it gets all over the crate and the pup. With a blanket/towel, it soaks up and isn't as messy. When Coby first came home he pooped and peed in the crate every day and night no matter how diligent we were. But finally one day within the first couple of weeks, that was over and no problems since. So patience.....

| I had a horrible time when I first got Bella with her crating. She was used to pottying in her personal space so I pretty much had to clean out her crate at least once per day. I tried no potty pads, tried the only enough space to turn around in. Finally I got a much smaller crate and put it in the larger one. She finally realized 'hey, I shouldn't potty in here' and has only had 2 accidents since. I think it's been 6 weeks or so since I did it.

YT 2000 Club Member | Thank you to all who have posted posted! My breeder said that she starts crate training the pups a few weeks before they get to come home. So that should be helpful for me. I was not sure if others had problems with pups messing in their crates because a blanket was in it! I will be using a small crate at first, the breeder gave me the name and size of what she starts out in and said that if I bring mine when Jeter is born then she will use it to start off crate training for me. She also agreed that it is allot less messy to clean if an accident happens when a blanket or pee pad is in the crate. I guess that since my husband works nights and sleeps daytime I can sneak a blanket in for him. Thanks again for the pictures and information! I might just go nuts before I get my puppy , I am so glad that I can come here and ask my stupid questions!! Thanks agin, Brandy |

| Most vets/breeders will tell you to crate train, but you can't keep them crated from sun up to sun down and not walk them outside. They cannot hold their bladders like a lab or Shepard. A crate should be big enough for the dog to move around in, not to just lay straight and be confined. The picture that HallT shows is similiar to how I did it. I put the pad on one side of the crate and on the other was her bed with a stuffed toy and chew toy. Most dogs will not poop where they lay and play unless they have been confined for a long period of time and have to release. If you put the pup on a crate and walking schedule, it will work out. They will still have accidents while playing or just because their bladders are so tiny. Us humans have to create a schedule for them by getting up at the same time every morning taking them out. Let them out as soon as they wake up, let them out again about 15 mins to a 1/2 hour after they eat or play. Get the pup use to going outside to pee and praise them highly and sometimes give a treat when they do so. Because of my work schedule, I free fed. Some pups have to be put on a breakfast, lunch and dinner schedule where you remove the dish after they eat but always keep water down. Some confined pups try and hold their urine and bowel movement till they explode in the crate or have gland problems later on. They do this because they know if they use it in the crate off the pads or on the floor, the owner will be mad. As soon as they come out the crate, a few pads should be waiting or they should go straight outside. I left the crate door open and eventually moved the pad to the outside of the crate and a few around the floor. I put the food and water off to the side. I bought a $10 walmart baby gate and she was behind the gate till she pooped on the pads if raining or snowing to hard. Then I let her out to play around the house a little more. The gate let her know that's where you do your business or go back if you've been bad. Good luck with your new baby.

YT 2000 Club Member | I will be home with Jeter when we get him so he will not be confined in a crate all that long. I agree that it needs room to move around when he is in the crate. The crate I am going to use looks just like the black one in HallTx1203's photos. Have gotten a few books on Yorkies and hope that I can get him potty trained with out hassel, I did potty train all 4 of my boy's before they were 2 years old ( boy's are said to be harder) so hopefully I will be able to get a puppy trained !Thanks again for the post on his the last time I had a dog was when I was in high school and my mom potty trained her while I was at school!! |

| I used a baby blanket in Mango's crate from the first day I brought her home. I also rolled up and old, small towel, leaving just enough room for her to stand up, turn around, sleep in. She never messed in there once, not even the first night. As she grew bigger, I took away the rolled up towel. Now of course, at 9 months, she uses the whole crate. This picture shows the crate with the top half taken off. You can see the baby receiving blanket, which by the way is on top of a small pad, made especially for the crate (PetsMart), with the rolled up towel taking up the extra space. The crate, as you can see is in a small wired exercise pen, also PetsMart. I did this to keep her confined and safe, as she was a really tiny puppy. I did put a pee pad on one side of the pen, which she started using the first day to go potty, the sweet, girl that she was. I have to say, that using this method, she toilet trained amazingly quickly. After 6 weeks at home, she was totally potty trained. Last edited by laurenr; 09-09-2007 at 05:28 PM. |

| Oops, I meant to post another pic, showing the whole setup better - the little crate placed in the ex-pen that confined baby Mango (she looks like a wind up toy.) you can see the crate in the background, this time with the top on. |
