Most vets/breeders will tell you to crate train, but you can't keep them crated from sun up to sun down and not walk them outside. They cannot hold their bladders like a lab or Shepard. A crate should be big enough for the dog to move around in, not to just lay straight and be confined. The picture that HallT shows is similiar to how I did it. I put the pad on one side of the crate and on the other was her bed with a stuffed toy and chew toy. Most dogs will not poop where they lay and play unless they have been confined for a long period of time and have to release. If you put the pup on a crate and walking schedule, it will work out. They will still have accidents while playing or just because their bladders are so tiny.
Us humans have to create a schedule for them by getting up at the same time every morning taking them out. Let them out as soon as they wake up, let them out again about 15 mins to a 1/2 hour after they eat or play. Get the pup use to going outside to pee and praise them highly and sometimes give a treat when they do so. Because of my work schedule, I free fed. Some pups have to be put on a breakfast, lunch and dinner schedule where you remove the dish after they eat but always keep water down. Some confined pups try and hold their urine and bowel movement till they explode in the crate or have gland problems later on. They do this because they know if they use it in the crate off the pads or on the floor, the owner will be mad. As soon as they come out the crate, a few pads should be waiting or they should go straight outside. I left the crate door open and eventually moved the pad to the outside of the crate and a few around the floor. I put the food and water off to the side. I bought a $10 walmart baby gate and she was behind the gate till she pooped on the pads if raining or snowing to hard. Then I let her out to play around the house a little more. The gate let her know that's where you do your business or go back if you've been bad. Good luck with your new baby.
