I waited until my dogs had all of their shots before we did walks. They were allowed to play in my yard but that was it.

For socialization, they went to families homes with dogs I knew were current on vaccinations

Here's what we have decided to do. We are going to place a litter box on the back patio so that we can litter box train the puppy outside. This way we won't have to worry about his exposure to anything other dogs passing through leave in the yard or any chemicals that may be used on the lawn.

For socialization, we can take our puppy to Pet Smart, but I will hold him while we are there. He can still get near other dogs and people. I suppose it won't be safe to let him walk on a sidewalk...or will it? I can also walk him inside the house.

I'm concerned about 1) not being able to housetrain the dog until he's 5 months, and 2) not being able to walk the dog, which is important.
Yes, I was told this also. That's why we resulted to housetraining him.

I do not advise putting Yorkie puppies outside in the winter to train them, but at other times it is fine...remember, Parvo is not airborne, it comes from the stools of other sick dogs...best wishes
Ditto this. I was told they can go in your own yard just not out and about

I would let the dog do its duty outside but only in your yard. Just make sure that no other dog has been hanging around. It is best if you have a fence. Five months is a really long time to not allow a dog to walk outside. I would be a little bit concerned about walking it on the street or in other public places though. There are just too many germs for that.

The reason breeders (& it's in my puppy sale contract) do not suggest you take your puppies out in public until they have all their shots is for your puppies own health & safety. Yes, smelling poo from a contaminated stool your puppy can catch Parvo, there is kennel cough (which is airborne) you have to worry about, fleas, ticks, mites, all parasites including mange and in general doggie germs. Even taking your puppy to a pet shop, where other people take their "sick" puppies for a quick fix can get your puppy sick. Remember, not all doggie owners care for their pets as well as you might and many people who can not afford a vet visit take their unwell pets into their local pet store for advice...

I even use a towel under my babies at the vet "just in case" and then the towel goes in the trash...

I think your idea for a litter box in the back yard is a great idea but I would not recommend going to the local pet shop and if you do dont put your pup down on their floor, please...better safe than sorry

He is far SAFER in your yard then Petsmart! Those places are virus factories...if I take an adult, which is rare, they are not put in the cart, they are carried. I would prefer they wore surgical masks, but they won't..LOL

Do not take your York to the vet uncrated.. never allow them on the floors. Watch to see the table is sanitized before taking them out of carrier..if not, I remind them.
In fact, I always call ahead to see what illnesses they are treating the day I go...get an early AM and get out...

PS..years ago before they had vaccine for parvo, I was sitting in the waiting room with a litter of puppies and two adults...the vet tech came out and I hear her tell the other tech they dogs in the exam room had parvo...I literally ran out screaming...in fact I made such a scene my vet called and said in the future they would call and tell me if there was a contagious disease cases there...!!!

I agree with you. When Kobe was really young we would never put him down on the floor, we would always be caring him...even in the vet's office. It wasn't until he had all his shots that he was finally able to walk the floors of the pet store.

We are in the process of building a house and will be moving. I have seen one dog roaming the neighborhood, and he has been in our yard. However, our grass is not down yet, but I'm sure once it is, the dog will still be roaming and could possibly roam through our yard. So I don't feel safe letting our dog go potty even in our own yard, even though we do plan to put up a fence shortly after moving in.

So how does my puppy get walking exercise?

Ok, I won't take him to the pet shop. But how do I socialize my puppy? I've heard weeks 8-14 is the critical socialization time. We didn't socialize our other dog, and we had so many issues with him. I don't want to make the same mistake. I want to keep my puppy safe, but I also want him to get used to people and other dogs while he's in that important phase.

How old is your pup? I know that many Yorkie breeders do not let their puppies go to their forever homes until they are at least 12 weeks of age because that is a critical time for the moms to socialize and teach her pups. I have never had a problem with the socialization of my fur-babies and all I did was introduce them to everyone & everything one step at a time. I always wanted them to be closer to me first, hehehe Hopefully, when you get him he will be pretty well socialized already and you will only have to keep nourishing that in him until he is fully vaccinated so he will be protected .

I am a little bit of an over protective mommy -but I don't even let my best friend bring her chi's (who are healthy and vaccinated) to my house when I have Yorkie pups or before mine were fully vaccinated just in case they had picked something up they would already be immune to while walking, that my pups were not protected from. Just in case...

The breeder lets the puppies go at 8 weeks, but we will probably wait until he's 10 weeks old. (One breeder says she lets hers go at 6 weeks. When I asked why so soon, she said other breeders let theirs go later because that's what they've been told.)

Anyway, I don't even know the vaccination schedule. And I am still not convinced that vaccines are safe. I believe the reason so many dogs are developing allergies is because of over-vaccination. And do you keep your puppy from vaccines containing LEPTO?
