I would let the dog do its duty outside but only in your yard. Just make sure that no other dog has been hanging around. It is best if you have a fence. Five months is a really long time to not allow a dog to walk outside. I would be a little bit concerned about walking it on the street or in other public places though. There are just too many germs for that.
