| http://www.amronsilkyterriers.com/am...ron-links.html theres a link to a few pics and info on silky's. Yorkie is one of the breeds used in the creation of the silky breed, they are bigger, longer and their nose is more pointed. Some silky's look like a yorkie while others you can clearly tell there is a difference.

To me, a Silky looks like a cross between the Yorkie and Westie. Silkies are bigger, longer noses and thicker coats.

| I find that a Silkie has a longer muzzle and a coat that is rarely floor length. I do know that some, if not many, commercial breeders have used a Silkie mom and a Yorkie sire because the Silkies are usually larger-they are chosen just because of that- and will produce more puppies with a minimum of cost. Anything for a buck and the public certainly cannot tell the diference. I think that is why there is such variation in the size of the puppies in the same litter- one just got the genes from mom..Well, that is over-simplified.. Next time someone asks a rude question about him just say "Oh, my!! You didn't recognize him as a Silkie (or Yorkie) from one of the largest SHOW kennels in the country?" And leave at that. You are not lying; you didn't say he was! |

| According to the article from above, NO Bows for silkies. Maybe that is why they think they are silkies? Do you have a bow? They look very similar, but the coat on a Yorkie grows floor length and I don't think a silkie's will. If we cut our dogs shorter, westie trim for instance, they would take on the appearance of a silkie. I personally wouldn't take it as an insult if someone asked if my dog was a silkie, I don't think most people would know the difference. I am usually surprised when people ask if mine are yorkies. It ain't fightin' words!

| I have a really big yorkie too... and even i don't know for sure if it's a yorkie or a silky. The breeder's papers say yorkie, and so do my vet's... even when they haven't asked me the breed. I figure they oughta know for sure right? I don't think it matters unless you're planning on breeding, and then, just for the sake of integrity, you should have someone who can actually tell the difference look at your pup. The only think I've noticed is that when they say Silkies have longer snouts... they REALLY have a long snout, and when compared with a yorkie it seems like a pretty obvious difference. Sure there's a variety, but all in all... if you're dog looks well proportioned. and it seems like you have to cut their hair all the time (if you keep it short) you probably have a yorkie. Congratulations on your yorkie! or silky! or your yirkie, or sorky!
