| Dew claw problems My Oliver (shih poo) snagged his dew claw and it is VERY sore. He won't let me touch it. I haven't seen any blood, and he puts weight on the leg, but I'm scared it's going to snag on something again. I posted on the injured thread but didn't get much response. I'm gonna take him to the vet on Monday, should I ask them to remove it, or do you all think it will heal on it's own. Does anyone know how much it would cost to remove an adult dogs dew claws, will they have to put him under? I feel so bad for my boy.

| I have a friend with a yorkie that had one front dew claw (not sure if only one was removed or one grew back..). He tore it on the carpet and she had it removed. Your dog will have to be put under for removal of the dewclaw. It is basically an amputation of the bone and nail. I would go ahead an have it (and the one on the other leg) removed to keep him from injuring it again later.

| Tis is just the reason I have all declaws removed the same time I have tail done. I know it will be a little expensive, and she will need to be put under, but it will be worth it in the long run. One of mine has a front declaw and I watch is very close, and would have it removed the first time it caused any problem. Sorry it is hurting so much....hope she feels better.

| My Cassie has her dew claws and is 8.5 years old now. she has only snagged it once and it healed nicely. I think she takes care not let it get tangled with anything. I didn't even think about having them removed at this stage but if it happens again I think I will talk to the vet about it. |

| Paula, please read this (or similar articles) before you make a decision. It's a lot different to have this done to a grown doggie than it is to have it done to a puppy a few days old. http://dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/200..._dew_claws.php

| Poor little baby! I hope she feels better soon. Max's grew back on one leg. It's tiny and twisted. The vet told me to leave it because it is surgery and it's so small she's not worried. Sounds like you'll have to see what your vet says.

| Thanks so much guys!!! Judy, Otis has a curly/corkscrewed dew claw too!!!! Ollie is doing well. Although he fought me, I kept trying to feel it as my work situation would not allow me to be off this morning. We were from 6 employee's to 3 today and I had to be a receptionist. But last night and this morning I could not feel the claw anymore. I think he ripped it off, but his legs are so furry that it hung on for awhile. Either that, or he chewed it off. But it's not there anymore and he lets me touch it a little now. I don't believe I'm going to have them removed. Just make sure to keep them trimmed and filed. He absolutely hates to be groomed or have his nails trimmed but it's worth it. You can't imagine how happy I am it turned out OK. I was thinking anesthesia, surgery all kinds of bad things. I hope this was the last time. Thanks for all the advice!!!

| Good! If he let you touch it, it's probably okay. You should sneak a peek at it to be sure. Maybe wet his fur when you get home and see if you can make sure it's not inflamed or infected. He's a little toughie! He took it off himself.
