| New Puppy! First day on YT! Hi my name is Diana and I just got a puppy...he is 4 months and about 7 lbs...he is the cutest thing ever! I wanted to know which kind of kennel or crate people mostly preferred for their puppies. Like a plastic crate or a wire one. I found a really nice plastic one with a door on the top and one on the side so he can stick his head out the top in the car if he wants! Let me know any suggestions PLEASE! also, the breeder said she doesn't think he will get any bigger than the 7 lbs. Does this sound right? |

| Welcome to YT Diana. Congratulations on your new puppy. I think he still has some time to grow. I think the breeder is not being honest here. I would guess him to reach around 12-14lbs. Looks like you might have yourself, what we call here on YT, a Teapot. That's a term for a larger Yorkie. They are wonderful pets. If you take a pup around 4months old and double the weight that is a guess as to his/her adult size. My Buddy was 6 1/2 lbs at 4 1/2 mo and today he is 15lbs. |

| Welcome to YT! There are so many great people here filled with info! My Lucy is also about 4 months (17 weeks) and she weighs 3 pounds 12 ounces, according to the growth chart she will be about 6 pounds full-grown. Typically to figure out the adult weight of your Yorkie you double their weight at 12 weeks of age. As far as crates go, I use a wire one for Lucy we have to crate her all day so we attached a waterbottle to the side of the wire crate, plus a tray at the bottom pulls out if there are any accidents for easy clean-up. I think I also have that plastic crate you are talking about, we tried to get lucy to sleep in one of those, but she didn't like it, barked and cried when she was in it. So needless to say it's just sitting in the basement collecting dust.

| Welcome to YT Diana and congratulations on your new puppy!!!! For crating, it depends on what you are using it for. If you want one for the car, a smaller one that has a place for the seat belt to loop through is good and usually one more soft-sided. If you are going to use the crate when you are away from home and for potty training, you want a larger crate that they can stand up fully in, be able to turn completely around and have a little bit of room in it. Either a plastic or wire crate will work for this purpose. You may want to have a blanket or something padded for the bottom of the crate for your pup's comfort as well. As far as size goes, if your pup is already 7 lbs at 4 months, he will get bigger than 7 lbs fully grown. The growth charts can give you a pretty good idea, but they aren't perfect either. My Angel was 2 lbs when I got her at 14 weeks, she gained a full pound during the next month and another 1/2 lb during months 5 & 6. She is slightly over 4.5 lbs. at 10 months and I don't expect her to grow too much more, but another 1/2 lb is probably realistic. Good luck with your puppy. You'll get lots of great information here!!!

| He still has growing to do. I think he will be 10 to 12 lbs. I have an 11 lb yorkie and that is still small. The breeder has mislead you though.

| He's going to get bigger, but it's hard to gauge exactly how big or little any puppy will be, i've attached a picture of my mom's yorkie's the first one is Max he weighs 5.5 pounds, the second one is Mazie she weighs about 13-14 pounds. They are both wonderful dogs. The third picture is my little Lucy she weighs 3.9 pounds right now and is 4 months like I said, she just got a haircut and had to be shaved Have any pics of your pup?

| That depends on you. If you already completely in love with your little guy, just accept him. Big, little or somewhere inbetween - Yorkies are simply the best. Bigger Yorkies are usually more solidly built, meaning you are less likely to have vet bills from an accident such as a broken leg or getting stepped on.

There's nothing you can do unless you had your heart set on a standard Yorkie which is 7lbs and under. I don't know how much you paid for him and what the agreement was between you and the breeder but he will definately be a larger Yorkie. If it does not bother you, he will be a wonderful pet. They are still small at the bigger size and you don't have to worry about injuries so much. Also, the larger ones are known to have less health issues. Health is key. | |

| What should you do? Just Love Him.His is still a small Dog.My Breeder told me "Dont Worry He will only be 6-7 lbs." He is now 13lbs and all yorkie boy.I also have another one who is 18lbs and I love him so much.I understand how you feel .You have been lied to.A good breeder doesnt tell you the weight. They can only guess. Just enjoy your puppy. I have a plastic carriers my boys sleep in when they choice. They also have dog beds. They are not crate trained. If your going to crate train a wire one is best.

| Thank you everyone! I feel better now! I wasn't worried about loving him, I just feel like she shouldn't have lied. I am picking up my puppy in a week, and when I visited him before, he didn't feel 7 lbs. Hmm...I guess I will just have to see! (The breeder did have an accent and I could have misunderstood her or asked the wrong question...) I think I'm going to get the plastic crate since I am picking him up and having him in the car. Then, if he doesn't like it I can always get a wire crate. You are all so helpful I love it! Thanks again! |

| Hi, and welcome! I think your puppy will get bigger too - and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I worry about stepping on Scooter all of the time - he's a little over 4 months and weighs 2.8 pounds. I'm so afraid I'm going to step on him and do some serious damage. I put a collar with a bell on it around his neck just to know where he is. I'm hoping he'll be at least 5 pounds grown so that we won't have as many problems health wise. Anyway, you'll love your baby regardless! |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Many breeders won't guarantee size or color. They can guesstimate how large or small a yorkie will be but that's about it. That's also taking into consideration if the dog is not spayed/neutered because they WILL pick up even more weight after that...though length and height is usually stopped by 8-10 months. Anyway, not much you can do at this point unless you signed a contract that stated he will not gain anymore weight. My guess is your furbaby will be between 9-11 lbs (unaltered). Can't wait to see pics!
