| is a 4 pound yorkie safe to breed?? I have a 2 yrs old, female yorkie. she weighs about 4 pound. is it safe to breed her? is she too small? I heard the male have to be same size or even smaller then her, so she wont hv trouble when laboring. anybody have trouble in breeding a 4 pound one? I really wanna have a bunch of yorkies running around my house, cause my house kind of big and empty..thanks |

| Four pounds is too small to breed. I think most reputable breeders wait til ATLEAST 4 1/2-5 pounds.

| I have two girls that weigh 4 1/2 and 5 1/4 lbs. I have breed each of them. They are sisters. Both are free whelpers and always have five puppies each. Now, after saying that, they are short on the ground and VERY wide bodied andd wide pelvises. It depends on the dog. I have another one that is just under that and the breeding was a disaster. I should have known better but I took my vets advice that she would be okay. Very small built, two puppies. Nothing but problems with the mama. She had to have a section and is now spayed so it never will happen again. |

| bitch Have the vet weigh her..when a person tells me their Yorkie weighs "about" XXX, I tend to find they weigh more...I had 3 pound male named Whiz..it got around that I had a ONE pound Yorkie and people would call wanting to see him..some saw him and still thought he was ONE pound. |

| No, not at all. There are people out there breeding their tiny poms; chihuahuas; maltese at these weights w/ great success and little to no issues. These are all people that show in conformation too. Their key? Despite pounds, it's more about build...not to say weight doesn't matter because it does, but structure is more important. |

| Ask your vet. Mine says what is more important is how labor was for their mother and of course if your girls are healthy If the mother of your girls had a easy birth most likely the daughters will too And it is smart to have same size or smaller male I am not a breeder I was just asking my vet ?? about it one day. Double check

| Before you consider breeding your pet there are a lot of things to consider. There are many thrreads on this forum that goes into a lot of breeding issues including death of a bitch and/or puppies. If you think you can deal with all the issues involved, then I guess it is your decision. For me, I would never consider breeding a 4lb female and would not use a 4lb male at stud. The other question is why would you breed her? Would she be contributing to improving the breed in any way? petfinder.com has so many yorkies on there desperately needing homes, why breed your pet? |
