| Good idea, take it to your vet. Just keep in mind that most vets are not for "the natural way." I don't follow the advice of those links personally. I just posted them for you so that you could see that there are options. I know some people who do the natural way for heartworm preventative and they do just the 1 drop of black walnut per day and 1 pinch of wormwood 2x a week.

| How is Diggy acting? Is he hyper and biting his skin to? I think it's due to the strength of this medication. Heres the pros and cons for Heart Guard and Revolution. Revolution pros-(it keeps the ticks and fleas off completely) Rev. cons- (dogs have adverse reaction on second or third dose due to its maximum strength) Heart Guard Pros- (no adverse reaction at all...milder medication) H.G. cons- (the fleas have to bite in order to ne affected by this medication which can lead to dogs allergic reaction to the flea bite.) This is the part about HG I don't like. The whole initative is to keep the fleas off our babies right? But the fleas have to bite for the med to work...This make no sense to me at all. How about you????????? |

Hubby says he is sleeping so maybe the adverse reaction is gone. How long did yours last?

| I thought you could break the dose in half to, but my vet told me to follow their directions. Jack was hyper for about 4 days and biting his tail the day or two after the dose. My main concern was his over hyperactivity. Jack is a mellow dog and it seemed the dose caused him to become irritated. So back to Heart Guard I went. All is fine now...Still no fleas or hyper issues. I just think the Rev. is way strong for our tiny ones. Maybe it would be better for the larger breeds? |

| I don't do my yorkie every month i wait until I see a flea, he gets a bath every week , something about that stuff I just don't like, in the year I think he had it one time. now the big dogs do get it every month because they run the fields all the time and come back with ticks. I don't have a choice with them, on the gulf coast they recomend doing it all year long. I have only use frontline and advantage. the frontline plus works better for me.. |

| I used Revolution on my Maltese with no reaction but heard the Frontline was better so I started using it on Muffin. I only give her half the dose because she's only 5 pounds. Her reaction to this medication is that after the application, she becomes very quiet and lathargic. She climbs in her bed within 5 minutes of me putting it on her and curls up in a ball almost like she just doesn't want anyone to bother her. She stays this way for a couple of hours. The first (and ONLY) time I put Frontline on CoCo who is only 3.5 pounds, she had a HORRIBLE reaction! Her eyes starting rolling behind her head and she was foaming at the mouth!! I was scared half to death. I also had put only a half dose on her but after I saw what was happening to her I immediately put her in the sink and started running water on her to wash the stuff off. I bathed her and she was fine. When I called the vet and told him what CoCo's reaction was, he insisted that she must have licked some of the medicine to have that kind of reaction. I told him that I was holding her the whole time and she never licked anything. Then he chastised me for only giving her half the dose!!! I almost flipped out on him. His solution was for me to bring her in after a couple of days so he could apply another dose to her and see her reaction. I told him I was never putting that poison on her again because I was afraid that she would die the next time.I talked to CoCo's breeder (Pam Hinkle) and she told me to use the spray Frontline on the kids. She suggested putting on rubber gloves and spraying the medicine on my hands and then rubbing it into the hair on her legs, underbelly and behind her ears rather than putting it INTO her skin. I tried this and she didn't have any reaction. So this is the way she and Muffin will be getting their flea and tick medicine. Let's face it people, this medicine is strong stuff and we have these little, innocent babies that are having this crap put into their bloodstreams. How can it NOT be hazzardous if on the box it says if you get it on your skin to wash if off immediately?? I think I'm going to look into the garlic thing. It make sense to me.

| muffinlvr, I think I remember you telling us that story about your baby's horrible reaction to the frontline, and your vets response. I was totally outraged that this vet would even suggest putting it on again and the fact that he was angry with you for not using the whole dose. Could you imagine what would have happened if you would have applied the whole dose?? I am all for the natural ways to take care of these things. Putting poison on them that we, as humans, shouldn't even be able to touch(being over 10x bigger than them) is not something I want to do to my furbabies. Good luck finding some of the more natural ways. Just google: natural heartworm prevention and natural flea prevention...You should get a food good ones.

| Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Okay vet visit went well....Did I mention I LOVE my vet!! Actually its the original vet of Bellas who seen Diggy yesterday he was in a bad car accident and has been off for a year or so. So Diggy is always seen by another vet in the office (there are 3) Anyway, Dr. Rob is AMAZING! He said he is shocked he is reacting to Revolution but like humans you never know. Revolution is the mildest of all topical fleas "oils" out of the major ones (frontline, advantix, etc..) BUT does agree with if a human cannot get on hands how do we expect dogs to handle it? He recommended Sentinnal. Humans can consume, and is Interceptor with flea preventative. I went over natural remedies which he is more than willing to help do, but says with the abundance of heart worm being diagnosed in his office this month, he would be scared. I agreed. Sentinnal in the months above 55 degrees and natural stuff thru winter. I know others were baffled with why its always the "2nd" dose they react to...here is why. Our/fur butts bodies spend the first time with the dose, checking it out, and taking note of what it is and doesnt fight it too much. Then second dose it says wait...I have already had this and fights it like CRAZY or just a little hence the differences in all dogs. Diggy's obviously HATES Revolution and was ready to put up a big fight. Which it did. He said the third and fourth dose more than likely will just be worse and worse. It all made perfect sense to me and he was VERY nice with the way he explained it. I had my daughter with me and she could even follow everything...unlike the ones that talk Wayyyyy over your head. So all and all he listed it as an adverse reaction to Revolution and recommends not to use again. He prescribed 1/4 tspn Benedryl for itching as needed. Diggy is STILL itching but not like he was before, and he did get some sleep last night whew....Thank you all for posting and helping me out. Feels like your world is crashing around you when something is wrong with your baby. He spent a total of an hour with me, had books out, talked, reviewed Diggy's whole chart as he hasnt seen him before just Bella, and guess what...HE DID NOT CHARGE ME A DIME! I was shocked He walked me out to the receptionist area and told the check out lady no charge!! Im going to send him a card for sure!

| Yipee Diggy. At least now you know. Its too bad because Revolution fought all of the diseases like heartworm, roundworm, fleas, ticks, even ear mites in cats. I liked the fact that I only had to give Jack one medication, instead of 2. But going back to heart Guard plus for heardtworm and Frontline is better then my baby flipping out..lol I'm glad your vet solved the mystery of the second dose...lol |
