| Drives Me Nuts~ I just had Joey to the vet to have his teeth cleaned. I have been growing his coat out and it's 3/4 to the floor. WHY do they have to shave his arm down to IV him? Does anyone's vet do this when their pups are put under anesthesia? I adore my vet and I'm just wondering if this is common practice.

| I'm really not sure if it is common practice. I'd assume its to keep the area clean, taping the tubes, and helping find the right area. I can only imagine what tape and long leg hair would create. /cringe It would have been nice if they'd mentioned needing to shave his leg since you were growing his coat out. I'm sorry it came as a surprise. |

| Yes, my girl who just had a C section they shaved both legs just in case. She she is naked from her knees to her ankles on her two front legs. Then when they shaved her tummy they also cut her skirt in numerous places making her coat a mess! But you know what? It is worth it to get those two cute puppies here. Thank goodness coats grow back. Though it can be very frustrating, can't it.

| I've had many dogs including fosters and have had many get operations and teeth cleaning and not once have their legs been shaved except for Zada, but she had her knees operated on. I wasn't even aware that a Vet. shaves the legs for an IV. Anyway, it will grow back out and if she goes in again for teeth cleaning or anything else, maybe you can ask that they not shave the legs. |

| I'm lucky to have a good friend as a vet tech so whenever my guys go for ANYTHING requiring an IV, she only shaves JUST a teensy bit, enough to get the IV in to the skin. When Bouncer had his declaws removed, I couldn't even tell she shaved right around the surgery site. lol I wish ALL vets/techs could be this good!

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | shave? Well hello stranger! Don't see ya on much anymore! How are the babies??? How many you fostering right now??? Your such a busy busy lady!!! As for shaving....When Bella and Ada were spayed I am assuming they had an IV and no they did not get shaved. Maybe its just a preference? Not sure. I can imagine how annoying that would be though. Bellas hair is VERY slow growing....it would tick me off too!!!!

| Ellie leg was partly shaved when she had oral surgery but it didn't bother me because we keep her in a short cut.

| Well if starting an IV on a dog is as hard as starting one on a human I could see why they would shave the area. When we get baby calls the only IV I can get is on their head and some babies have a TON of hair. Hair makes it EXTREMELY hard to find a vein so we shave the area. You have to also secure the line as well or they could pull it out. Once its in place its really important it stays there. I dont know... yorkie have small veins so if there is not any hair it allows you to see the size so you dont collapse the vein and if they are like humans there are very few veins that are big enough for an IV so you cant keep trying? Just an idea...

Well, I clipped Joey down a little. He has beautiful silky hair. My thought is, I can understand the tape but if the pup is out of it, they wouldn't really feel it when it's being taken off. His leg looks like a chicken leg! I love my vet and I suppose I should just write it on the paper when I sign off and drop him off to NOT SHAVE HIS LEG BARE.... His teeth look so clean and healthy. He's an every 6 dental babe~
