Well if starting an IV on a dog is as hard as starting one on a human I could see why they would shave the area. When we get baby calls the only IV I can get is on their head and some babies have a TON of hair. Hair makes it EXTREMELY hard to find a vein so we shave the area. You have to also secure the line as well or they could pull it out. Once its in place its really important it stays there. I dont know... yorkie have small veins so if there is not any hair it allows you to see the size so you dont collapse the vein and if they are like humans there are very few veins that are big enough for an IV so you cant keep trying?
